| I mixed on monitors my first 2 1/2 years of producing. Than I moved into a town house and I was forced to use only headphones. Even though the headphones are great quality I find myself getting angry trying to mixdown just on headphones now. Balancing the frequencies and levels between the kick & bass alone is a pain in the ass and I hate doing it w/out speakers. I already had the neighbors call the cops on me a friggn week after I moved in with my brothers.. they were PISSED. Even if I turn the monitors on low it goes right through the wall. |

I have similar problems with my neighbors. I have no problem with noise in the daytime when I am at work, but sheesh... I have no patience for their crap-rap beats at 1:30AM, none (and the hole in my bedroom wall proves it)!!! I'm sure you don't do the same to your neightbors, but I feel your pain in terms of townhouse limitations. I am in the same boat. For crime in Italy... I've got these KRK V4's doing nothing but collecting dust because of it. |

i use headphones for composition. and my monitors for the mixing - usually only about 20 mins on adjusting while listening to the monitors. headphones have a terrible habit of making a track sound warm, when really it is harsh. eg - a snare/kick level ratio is very hard to get right in the headphones imo. though i find headphones nice for doing my bass/kick level ratio due to the fact that i cant turn the monitors up in my flat enough.
my monitors are great because if the track sounds great on them, the track usually sounds 100x better on a hi-fi/club rig:) |

| Headphones are great for composing, you get lost and immersed in the sound and they're the closest thing to really being there in a club while writing. However that's their main problem, they're too immersive and you need your monitors to sit back and try to see the mix from a more objective viewpoint. Mixing is really hard to do well when you're 'inside' the music. |

Well said, agreed completely. I do most of my composing on headphones, but when it comes to the mixing it just has to be done on something far less biased. My sonys sound great, but they greatly exagerrate the mids and make the track sound more banging than it necessarily is. I had the benefit of running a clubnight when I was first making tracks, so was able to learn the easy way that it sounding good at home did not mean it sounded good at the club =P |

A great tool for comparing the frequency ranges of headphones. They don't have any stats on Sony headphones, though. I've been using Sony MDR-7506 headphones for many years and have had many digital releases and even a 12" release.
But lately I've been wanting a good pair of monitors. I imagine once I get them, I'll still be using headphones 70% of the time. Mostly because I don't want to piss off neighbors. ;) |
