Anyone do any serious php/coding?

You may think it's in the wrong forum, but it ain't! I've been talking with a few friends now and they all agree this project can go somewhere and that I'm overly optimistic.

I want to make a site that caters to everything EDM scene related. More than just a soundclick or community without a backbone.

Why? I've realized the importance of a dj/producer/scene related community far more than just forums or myspace. I know enough people who know enough people that can make this work (you for example!).
In short, the site will be a haven for already established and/or striving djs and producers to commune and congregate. People sign-up and have their own individual corners to write blogs, post new samples of their work and request feedback, post text/video logs, and get to post on others corners and posted items. Less of the adding bull and clutter like on myspace. Straight to the business. A&R, DJ's, or even ordinary people alike would come to the site to sift through a specific channel designated to presenting the sampled work of unsigned material.

I have many more ideas too, but these will get no where if I don't grab a coder to work with (I can do graphics/layout/flash)!

What do you guys think

sites like that need time to grow, most probably the few first years are very inactive, are you sure you won't give up if it doesn't take off right away?
and not to sound too negative, but i don't think many established producers have the time or will to join a site like that. in the end it would just be full of demo artists.

yea agree with the above poster. established artists wont waste their time with sites like these for various reasons. a main one is alot of labels wont sign tracks that are posted on the net. also do we really need another site like this! there are loads out there.

It won't work if it's left there to grow on itself... but I talked with some big dudes in the scene who said they would have no problem posting blogs and producing tips, or even videos of them in the studio. I don't want to make another soundclick site, who needs that? I want to make a source to the scene :(

i dont no. just cant see it taking off but who am i to decide.

most established artists don't even update their myspace or website page themselves, but is kept up to date by their management. so it's kinda hard to believe they would have time for a site like that. some might though, but like i said in the end it'll probably be just upcoming / demo artists that nobody has heard of..

The idea seems good but getting people in and getting people to stick around is always a challenge. I think building it should be easy, I am sure their are open source solutions you could just modify to suit your needs. I would love to help but I'm only a new php coder and wouldn't be much help with this.
With the cost of internet hosting these days I say why not try it.
I'm sure it wont cost much and either way it will be a good learning experience.
Good luck and keep us informed.
Leon
Thank you, I will. I'm going to go ahead with this real soon!

Anyone have any cool names?

if you're gonna make something make a site that focuses on progressive trance (and maybe progressive house), since there isn't one like that already :)

since what you're saying sounds basicly something that myspace already does.

You guys are missing the heart of the draw to the site :(

Listen, just keep tight, and I'll show you what I mean soon I hope!
