carrying a balance does not help or hurt your credit score.
your score is improved over time by paying your bills on time...that's it. the longer the time you've been making at least that minimum payment, the more your score will improve.
for the most part, as the credit score matrix is rather complex, it doesn't matter how much credit you have or what balance you carry, only that you pay on time, don't exceed your credit limit and don't make numerous credit applications within a short period of time.
it's also a good idea to have a few credit cards, even if you don't carry balances or use them much...and a line of credit is even better. Having more than just one credit card demonstrates a "mature credit file".
hard hits are when you apply for a new product. one or two hard hits DOES NOT drop your score. a few (or more) hard hits in a short period will drop incrementally drop it each time.
when your institution does a periodic check on their own (e.g. for automatic credit limit increases), it's a soft hit and neither impacts your score, nor shows as an inquiry on your bureau to others who access it.
There are a few threads on here where I've typed out lengthy replies re: credit, but that's the just of it ;) |

ive occasionally (in the last 6 months) missed more than one payment being on time, and didnt pay it until partly w/ the next period.
i recently last month have just ordered another copy of my credit report and credit/FICO score from equifax.
when it came, i was surprise to see my rating unchanged by the couple late payments (less than 30 days late).
under the section where it lists your individual liabilities (credit cards, LOCs, etc), where the notes are from each item, it never said anything negative.
One of the column was to comment on your 'good standing' w/ the item, and mine all still continued to say "Makes Monthly Payment Each Month" (or something to that like)...
so it appears that my several late payments werent reflected w/ equifax....
found that interesting. |
