Do DVD Drives just die without notice?

I set a DVD to rip last night and when I woke up in the morning and put the blank DVD in to burn it wouldn't detect. I quickly noticed that it now won't read or write any discs at all.

Assuming that it might be a corrupt winblowz problem, I tried booting to the windows xp installation cd but it couldn't detect that either? Do drives just die like that, without any warning? I've burned a minimum of 2,000 discs in the last 2 years with it.. is that enough to kill it?

I just always assummed it would start struggling for awhile and then die after that.

i'd say 2,000 would be enough to kill it... i could be wrong

DVD drives tend to be less concerned with your emotions than sick Family members... mine have never had final words with me before they went.

do the lights on it still flash making it look like it's working.. but it just doesn't register on the computer

a faulty cable could also be the culprit

Yup, they die all the time. From my experiences, they are the first thing to let go in a system, and the part that I have replace most often, no matter what brand I buy.

It's possible; but in your case the answer is no b/c you noticed it not working ;)

+1

Thats actually happeend before where my laptop wouldn't recognize my external DVD Burner.

Some times if i restarted my laptop after a few times it would actually recognize it, but then it just died. So got an exchange somehow (can't remember where or why) but got a new one.

It's been like 3-4 years and so far so good. Every once in a while (1/15 tries) the burn will fail and ruin a DVD-DL which sucks big time! But what can you do.

I've had drives just crap out like that before.

it happens. and considering the use you got out of it, you got a good one that lasted!
