I'm not registered to vote.
I voted 4 years ago - for Badnarik. It was a vote well-spent.
I do not plan on voting this time around.
Now hold on, before you judge me, let me make it very clear that I am not one of those people who has been disillusioned merely because whomever they voted for last time did not win. God, those people can right off. I just do not believe in democracy. I've been disillusioned (if there really is such a thing in the US), but only because I get sick to the stomach when I see the people who will end up being the only choices. None of them are worth a damn. I'm full aware that people like myself will never truly be satisfied with whomever is running for office, but I think that this single, tiny little protest is worth it - so maybe I'm not quite all that disillusioned after all. :p
But selling democracy to the world in the form of death counts? People starving to death in the US and suffering from medical conditions while we spend billions waging wars in countries all in the name of 'freedom' - conflicts that WE started some time ago and have funded and armed? Wasteful toxic irresponsibility and corporate incentive to continue the cycle until we've all been bled dry? It's all a broken ing record. I'm sick of reading it, hearing it, speaking it, and I am sure you are as well. That doesn't make it all go away though. And I quite honestly doubt that any person rich enough to win the executive popularity contest is capable of truly changing these things, so who the cares who gets to be world celebrity/scapegoat Number 1? You can keep your elections, I don't want anything to do with it.
(this is the part where you fags link Ron Paul's website to me) |

Strong incentives should be given to voters. Like free money in whatever form it takes, i.e. tax incentives?.. |
What a sad state democracy has become if people has to be coerced/bribed with money in order to vote |

Actually it might be a demonstration of how good it has become. Essentially, people want to be left alone, and so if they generally are, they won't care about the government or what form it is. Until it affects them in their practical lives, some people just don't care beyond their small circle of acquaintances. |

We've hashed this out before, but I still disagree. There's only ever been one politician that I've been able to get legitimately excited about (I even joined his campaign briefly), but now that he's dead there hasn't been anyone. But if voting were about finding someone that you truly get excited about, I don't think anybody ever would vote. It's a matter of choosing between the options you've been given. The nominees are the nominees, and it is our job to pick the one that won't screw up the country any more than it already is. It's probably a pessimistic take on democracy, but it's what we've been left with until another person comes along who truly can speak for the people (and no, that person is NOT Ron Paul). |

Yeah, and your view point seems sensible enough - it always did. But prudent decision-making doesn't impress me. The it's your job to choose from the lesser of the available evils thing seems a submission that I want no part of. I'm not going to change things by not voting. I am well aware of that. But to give in to the process merely out of default is just something I cannot bring myself to do. It's not my job. The government is there to serve the people, not tell me what my job should be, especially when all that it comes down to is who gets more votes because they had better advertising, better funding, better PR, better vocabulary and television charisma, etc... It's not that I am afraid of voting for 'the wrong one'. It's that supporting something I do not entirely care about is far more superficial than I am willing to participate in.
Besides, I would much rather operate outside of the process. When people give the whole well you are not allowed to voice your opinion because you didn't vote thing, I will feel far more justified in regarding them as potential candidates for the Government Depopulation Programme. (I'd vote for that btw) |

:wtf:
I most definitely was not referring to him. lol. I was talking about Paul Wellstone, who died campaigning in 2002.
And I see your point about the futility of the whole thing, but I'm not willing to give up on it. The system is damaged, it's true, but I don't think it's broken yet. And if enough people who recognize it's failings were to vote, I still hold out hope that things would change for the better. But I think we will just have to agree to disagree. :) |

Yeah cos those who wouldn't normally be arsed to vote have defiantly fully considered how to use their vote and will in no way nullify the choices of the people who actually bother to look into it.
To be honest to me in a lot of ways compulsory voting is the undemocratic. (though suppose you could just spoil your ballet). |
the alternative is where entire sections of the disenfranchised are ignored by politicians. forcing everyone to vote means those standing for election need to consider all points of view and all citizens, rather than just the middle class.
there is no problem with getting your ballot paper and jamming it into your arse, so nobody is forcing you to actually do anything more than getting your name ticked off. i think that's a small price to pay to get one of the best democratic systems in the world like we're lucky to have in australia. |

| I am registered to vote in my country and plan to do so next year just as I did last election. We have 'vote from abroad' program because we have so many people living out of the country so I might take advantage of that. Bad thing is I have to fly to Montreal which is almost as expensive as flying back home ( the Dominican Republic). |

i think you should! imo you could use a little bit of breathing space from your country :D i really do feel there's a lot less "evil" at the top of the power food chain(s) in this great country :) (i am not in the least bit nationalistic either) |
