Wouldn't it make more sense to call it Red Friday instead of White Friday? Since the reason they call it Black Friday is because this is traditionally the day that shopping season begins and retailers move from red (loss) to black (profit).

Gee I never thought about it that way. We build about 20,000 washers/day based on demand. So yeah, I'm going to guess that there are probably one or two people who will need a washer & dryer and would like that deal. |
That was not the point of my statement. I didn't say there was no demand for product. We were discussing deals and their significance. No need to draw conclusions which aren't there.

You work for Whirlpool? Dude, can you hook me up with some deals? Looks like I might need a washer/dryer after all - are you available this friday?

P.S. - I think Sears is having a 50% off sale on all their parts on Friday. You should have waited to fix your dryer. |
Screw Kenmore/Sears - crappy product. Whirlpool is much better. Besides, I got the hook up with you man... right? So, whatdayasay? Available this Friday? |

Americans have long associated "red" with "communist" - it would be a major PR disaster. There's no way the Evil Corp. is willing to risk profits on some silly logic.
Besides, since moving from red to black on a Friday --- that would sort of make sense why they call it "black friday", coz technically if they weren't in the black - they'd still be in the red, no? Let's discuss it until we're blue in the face. |

If you want a deal then you should go to Best Buy on Friday! They've also got a top-load pair for $499. Besides, my discount is reserved for myself and immediate family and the purchase program has already received a fair share of abuse earlier in the year. I have no desire to test my employer's limits. |

Lol, yeah, we live in Morrisville now. Probably going to move again within the next 3 months. Undecided as to where though. |

| I would have to agree with OP here. People that go out of their way to get those "door buster" deals are suckers. I saw a couple of things that I wanted on circuit city black friday ad and noticed some really kick ass prices. Then I realized that the items were made by some ty off brand. |

seriously, has anyone found really amazing deals in the store that couldn't be found online? I'm sure the store is not selling crap at loss... or if they do - it's usually the crap they just can't get rid of otherwise. So they lube you up, you take the bait and SUCK IT.
Nearly everything I've seen in the adds, could be purchased somewhere else online for comprable price (esp. after you factor in the taxes, etc.).
dunno. IMHO Black Friday is for suckers. |
You obviously have no understanding about retail sales, marketing strategy, product placement and distribution in any way shape or form.
Black Friday works on the basis of stores luring in customers with highly discounted items in hopes that the customer will buy other products aka early christmas shopping etc.
Have not followed the trend in the last couple years ( not in the US anymore ) but I know for a fact that a fair sum of products that are highly advertised are sold at a loss.
Take Black Friday '03:
the Apex DVD/CD Player : $29.87 that caused plenty of fights in Walmart stores was sold with a 10 dollar loss for the store.
emc^2 Stop talking about things you have not even the slightest understanding of the subjects at hand. |

yep. it's even more exaggerated, though. example from the store I'm at now:
this past saturday, we made about $60k in profit.
black friday last year, we lost $981 for the day. |
