I was on a flight once.....the guy was actually really nice though, it made it tolerable. |

Is there a polite way to tell someone they are going to burn in eternal DOOM!!1!!!!1 if they don't convert to your personal version of Jesus worship? |

Being in a diverse place in the bay area, for some reason I haven't encountered too many of them.
I've encountered the opposite of religious zealots more though. I have encountered kids who wear black, listen to anti-society bands, and just hate jesus because christians are "sheep" but they listen to the same bands and wear the same clothes, they are sheep themselves.
I encountered a dude from the church of latter day saints while waiting on the bus a few weeks ago. I showed no interest, and I respectfully tried to show him I wasn't interested, but he kept insisting I listen.
From those two experiences, I realized everyone's an . |

As absurd as christianity and mormonism is, there is percievable credibility in the number of followers, so I can see how it has come to be. BUT, I'll tell you whats worse than mormons; new age "spiritual" people. I am unfortunate enough to have a mother and a sister who belong in this tree hugging band of insanity. All it takes is a flavour of the month book, recommended in Cleo, and that's it; instant cult recruitment.
Has anyone ever heard of a book called Kryon? My mum used to be into that bs. Basically some guy wrote this book, claiming he had come in touch with an alien of some form and that all this stuff was going to happen and blah blah blah. It's basically an even less credible version of the bible (if that were possible), involving aliens. Another one is the pleadian mission.
The other thing that pisses me off is people that think they "know things". "I see spirits". "I know when my friends are going to call me". People that believe in zodiacs and astology piss me off too.
I wouldn't say I don't believe in a god of some form, I just think every existing form of religion and "spirituality" is retarded. |

| I usually tell them that I am a devout Roman Catholic and while I respect their beliefs I'm quite comfortable in my faith. Then I tell them to enjoy burning in hell because only Catholics go to heaven. |

That's when you start preaching to THEM about Pastafarianism and the FSM. |

I actually like being mormon. While it's a very serious subject, I think a lot of people just don't know how to bring it up and present their beliefs in a way that is nonconfrontational etc... I mean, to be honest, I never told anyone that they would burn in hell for not being mormon. Nor do I believe that is the case. I think it's just lack of real understanding on both ends. On one side you have people who portray mormons as devout religious jihadists, and on the other side you have the over-zealous mormon eager to share his/her beliefs. Both are doing it all wrong imo.
I found that a lot of people are really eager to criticize religion, but don't take the time to really understand it (regardless of what it is). I think this is really emphasized here in the US where any muslim = terrorist or at least mildly suspicious of them. |

Uh huh. That's definitely why. |

to be honest i dont make that much of a distinction. organised (moderate) religion is the cesspool from which fanaticism grows. |
Well, couldn't you say extremism can come from any and all forms of philosophical thought? Anyone can be a zealot for what they believe in, god or no god. If they infringed on my rights, i'de be pissed, otherwise I don't care what other people believe. |

true, but religion has its own particular and unique pedestal in the "ism" hall of fame. how many people do you know that blew themselves up in the name of atheism? ;) |
