Hey all, finally been getting a chance to mess around with production and learning Reason and put this song together, this is really my "first". I'm looking for input because I really want to get better at this. This song is still a work in progress I just want to see where I should go next. Also, I'm pretty limited on equipment, really just have some computer speakers and a laptop. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the listen! Do you have any suggestions? Favorite parts? What needs work? |

Not a bad attempt for first track.
There some good elements. I think you need to add a few more layers as the track is building so for example a couple of pads, sweeps etc. in the background. This keeps the tune interesting. Example a light string at some point to float the track a bit. Also I think the same drum beat is used most of the track. Adding some extra drums here and there is a good idea.
For me trance or dance for that matter is all about the build ups and break downs. Structure is essential as the track should be almost predictable but the really good tracks are unpredictably predictable if that makes sense? However to keep the listener interested you can also build up the track at the end of sequences (eg: 16th or 32beat) on the way to the climax. So for example just before you change or introduce a new melody while opening the filter on bass sound you add some extra sweeps / wooshes etc. to highlight the fact something different is about to happen. Make sense??
The melody should never sound too repetitive so either you need to keep the melody changing with automation or note/chord structure or you need to add something else that catches the ear.
Ok I think I'm rambling now. Bottom line you're on the right track. Mixing needs improvement but that will come with experience. Introduce some new elements and you're on the way...
Good luck. |

For your first attempt this is actually pretty nice.
My only suggestion I can really say at this time is to work on your mixing and volume levels and things, and just to keep on working at it :). |

Thanks, I've messed with reason for a couple months now and just got the tutorial DVD to start getting a little more technical. I've actually made a couple loops and such but never anything more than a minute. |

Not sure how good the tutorial dvd is but my experience of training material is that it's usually dissapointing.
If I were you I would go to propellerheads site and download as many reason tracks within your preferred genre as possible. I've have learnt many rewiring and automation tips by doing that.

The AskVideo tutorial DVD's were actually pretty useful. I taught myself a lot about Reason prior to watching them and after watching the DVD it covered things I had questions about and how each piece of equipment is used in a lot of detail. |
