building stuff

I'm thinking about building a midi controller, since there's nothing out there that has everything I want, in the places I want, and since I figure it would be a good, productive hobby to take up some free time for a while. I'm just concerning myself with the actual hardware for the moment, since the pieces I want are going to take a ton of tedious, ultra-precision work to craft, and I've got a lot to learn before I can do the other stuff, anyway. I sketched out a rough plan of what I want to be where, & I've started playing around with the actual materials, to see what works, what doesn't, what I like, what feels good, etc.
I'm not in a rush, and I have a ton to learn before I'm even capable of building everything in this thing, so I'm certainly not expecting to finish it for a loooooooong time (that's kinda the point). If somebody here has already done the same thing, and knows exactly how to do it, great, but I'm mainly just wondering if anybody else has tried to build or customize some piece of equipment. If so, what were the easiest/hardest/impossible parts, & is there any advice you'd give on the process in general? |

Check out http://ucapps.de/ (click their forum link). That is a German site but it's in English. Building your own Midi controller seems to be more common in Europe.
Also http://www.doepfer.de/home.htm - a company in Germany that makes lots of Midi stuff including components and board kits. If I was to actually try building a controller, I'd check out their boards that can handle most of the electronics, their USB64 board looks interesting as a starting point. Some of Richie Hawtin's controllers use Doepfer boards.
Big job though, building your own, even using a commercial board.
Here's a demo of a nice one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QuJMlsh1UZI |

Nice controller but those jog wheels look crap!
There was a guy on here a couple days ago that was going on about how he'd built his own and it was used at trance energy. SISQ i think it was called. |
