does the motif always have to be related ?

my question is does the motif always have to be taken from the main melody ,like rhythmicly ,or can a motif work that is a bit different rhythmicly but in the same key ,just wondering.
I went online and a lot of songs motifs sound so close to the main melody if anyone has made a track or know of a track that differs a bit from the main melody let me know. |

| a good example of motif is how on NIN's fragile trent uses a similar melody throughout the album. not exactly the same but the same notes. a motif doesnt have to be tonal though. it can be a cool sample of rythmic section. but a motif isnt looped the entire song. its just pulled in when there is supossed to be a strong point of the song. |

Yep perfect example of a motif. And to the OP no it doesn't have to be the main melody but make sure you keep it in key. Unless you're specifically going for discordance. |
