This will be my first SLR. Need some advice from all you experts here.

I am leaning more towards the D40x, but would like to get some feedback from you.

What are some pro/con and what camera would you recommend?
djbruuen
congrats on making the jump to the SLR world,

firstly both are excellent cameras and i don't think you'd necessarily be disappointed in either (remember getting amazing quality lens that usually cost as much as the camera themselves on some occassions are usually required to get those breathtaking shots. A recommendation is to only buy the body and forget about the kit lens)

I'm personally holding out a bit and saving my pennies for the step above the rebel xti and getting the Canon 40D (i don't know what canon was thinking by naming it that  ) just search the on amazon .com reviews like a hawk, a lot of great info there. regardless all three are great, buying the lens are what will be difficult.

I've been looking at the exact same two models. I've tried both a couple of times, and spoken to a few people that either own both, or use them professionally. Without fail, all have suggested that I go with the D40x.

sadly, the D40x is MUCH Better Built than the XTi, its a solid camera, and yes, the lens counts more than the body.

and for bruuen regarding the 40d...pretty solid camera, new sensor, better color gamut than 30D, but personally, live view is nothing special, it looks through the lens when its wide open.

i might go for one for the heck of it if and when it drops in price in the coming weeks to accompany my 24-70, 300mm, and 17-40.
Sasha
go with canon 40d

here is a comparison chart between the 400d/xti and d40x

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...n_d40x&show=all

based on the sensor manufacturer alone i would pick the xti. the xti uses a canon sensor while the d40x uses a sony sensor.

How big is it? (I didnt see it on the chart unless I am retarded??)

I have been thinking about upgrading to a high quality camera (plan on travelling now that I am finally done with grad school)....but I am also keeping in mind that I would like to take my camera OUT with me once in a while on top of my new photography obsession. I know some clubs wont let you take a certain size camera in without a pass, plus I dont want to lug a bulky thing around.

^^thanks for the chart, chinamon. ;)

the d40x and xti are probably the two smallest DSLR's on the market but they are still a few times bigger than the typical compact point&shoot.

according to dpreview.com the dimensions of the d40x is 5.0 x 3.7 x 2.5 inches. that is body-only. size will vary depending on what lens you mount.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I'm pretty happy with it.
It's a solid camera.
