1. What is a "god?"
2. If one existed, how could we tell? Or to put it another way: what would distinguish a universe where a god existed from one where no gods existed?
[If you believe in God and your answer to (2) is "nothing" or "I don't know," then why do you believe?] |

I used to relish discussions like these arising on TA, now I cringe and keep to myself.

I have in the past, and aside from a handful of people on here who understand that my own beliefs are steeped in extensive thought on such metaphysical issues and respect me (and my beliefs) for it, there are far too many who feel compelled to prove that what they believe is somehow "more true" than what others do.
This right here pretty much sums up my opinion on the matter:

The problem is with "believers" in general, not with atheists or theists in particular. People who think that their hold on truth lets them do anything they want to people who think differently.
An atheist can be a "believer" as much any Christian, e.g. a "believer" in the dictatorship of the proletariat ("Communism") as implemented under Stalin -- and many atheists (even outside the Soviet Union) were in fact "believers" in Stalin and defended him, especially in the early days. |
I think once you realize this, having discussions like these becomes a lot less fun unless you're engaging in them with individuals who you know aren't zealots (and there are just too many of those buggers on here). |

I'm getting there too. It's rather sad that we've reached the point at which those who have something meaningful to contribute to a discussion choose not too because the abundance of uninformed banter is just too much to bother with. |

It's just become this completely polarized discussion: you either believe in god or you believe in science, and for either side the middle ground seems to be shrinking rapidly, and those of us who aren't content with either extreme position seem to be becoming an endangered species of sorts.
Simply put, I don't like having someone else distill my position down to something tailored to their own objections, and have thus become resigned to the fact that an increasingly smaller number of people will accept my thoughts for their own worth, rather than based on their expectations. |
