due to the release of some major haxs tools,
hacking has become commonplace.
what do you feel should be the ramifications of hacking?
should someone counter-hack, find the location of the intruder and kill their family?
should it be left to a criminal charge with a prison sentence?
or should it be left to a civil court? |

| If you are not aware, hacking is illegal. |

| yes, but my question is- what should be the punishment? |

mandatory relinquishment of right to use devices used to accomplish their hack (computer, phone, slot machine) or to walk into a Radioshack :thepirate for a certain time period.
Other than that, maybe an e-medal and a job. |

ban them to dial up. |
That wouldn't work here in the US. It is unconstitutional to have cruel and unusual punishments. |

as it stands now- it is only truly a criminal offense if done against the government (in the US), which leaves it to civil court-which means sueing someone until they will never have any money ever.
my perspective is that is should be more along the lines of the Muslim punishment for crimes- cutting off both hands.
what do You think? |

| Real hackers are people who can make a computer do whatever the they want it to do. Not criminals. |

You can learn many things from hacking... but it's a lot more advanced today. When I first got on the net was a hacker's playground (1994-1997) - most system admins didn't bother to patch their systems -- all you needed were a few good scripts, an ip range, and you were laughing.
You used to be able to do a search on lycos/altavista for ws_ftp.ini files - which was the de-facto FTP software of the day - and had a retarded stagger algorithm for encryption - it was trivial to figure out and a great way to get shell accounts.
Next up was ppl using Windows 3.1/Trumpet Winsock for dialup access and their setup file (trumpwsk.ini). It encrypted the password (if you chose to have it saved in the config file) - but - if you opened it up in a text editor, and paste the encrypted string into the username field then you could just open up the software, go to options (to edit your settings) and see the password in cleartext in the username field. lol.
IMO, hacking should only be a criminal charge if the hacking is a precursor to an actual crime... Going in - snoopin around but doing nothing - isn't worth the resources of prosecution. |
