If you think reason might be the only thing you'll be using for quite a while, then a single larger widescreen might be nice. If you think you'll use another program later and will want to rewire, then go with dual.

I started with a single Samsung 225BW (22" widescreen) and was very happy with reason on it. Then I inherited an Acer 19" (Non-widescreen) and have been very happy with having two monitors. I run Live's sequencer in the widescreen, and VSTs to the right in the Acer.
If you're going to want to rewire later, then two widescreens would fit the bill wonderfully.

The Samsung has been a great monitor, no problems at all! Contrast ratio is a bit bothersome for movies, as it just doesn't get dark enough. Image is quite sharp and refresh seems high. No complaints here, really

Acer, on the other hand.... well... I'm on my second one as the first just quit out. On the second one a pixel is stuck red, and another is out. I don't know if that's still common and I'm just lucking out with the Samsung, or if in fact their quality is a bit lower. ?

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide on!

samsung make the best lcd PANELS (as in the actual LCD panel inside the monitor). acer, benq, hp, etc. usually use chimei panels or some other brand.

Do they (samsung) actually manufacture their own panels, or do they source them?

Ok lets make a bit of a distinction here to avoid confusion! "Panel" = the lcd screen inside the monitor. "Monitor" = the case, controls, panel etc.

Samsung is the only major MONITOR brand who manufactures their own PANELS. That said, not all Samsung MONITORS use Samsung PANELS. For example, the 226BW has three different panels in the same model (A = Samsung, B & C = Chimei). It's a luck of the draw with that model.

Pretty much every other MONITOR brand sources their pannels from Chimei/CMO or Samsung and so forth. Dell often use Samsung panels in high end monitors. ASUS are also doing it a bit more lately.

When you look at LCD prices, you will always see some LCDs are a fair bit cheaper than others. This is because they use a panel. There is really no such thing as a "good deal" in IT. Everything has a cost and you get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap monitor, the inverter probably hums, it is probably a crappy 6bit panel (not 8bit) and the colour controls are probably crap.

FYI, 6 bit panels go up to "16.2M colours". This is not accurate. A large portion of that 16.2m colours are dithered from 6 bits. 8 bit panels support 16.7m colours, without any dithering. Obviously 8 bit panels are far better quality.

To throw some numbers at you...

8-bit panel: 16,777,216 colours
6-bit panel: 262,144 colours

Thats a massive difference lol

On topic...

it depends on what software you're using really. something like ableton live or reaper is probably best on a bigger monitor. cubase, sonar, protools, etc. would definately be better on two monitors. i would say go widescreen if you're gonna get 24" or higher. otherwise 2x17" would be the win.

general computing is also better on two monitors, in my oppinion. even though i have a 22", i still do most of my work in fullscreen, leaving no screen space for other aps. logic would say this is just a habbit, but i've had this screen for 12 months so i don't think so! :)

So, to stay a little bit offtopic :D
How do you find out which type of panel it is. I'm looking into the 206BW, don't know if those can have three different panels too.
Is there any way to look it up when in the shop or can the seller can look it up?

google usually has the answer, if you type in like "206BW chimei". worst case scenario, go on whirlpool (australian broadband forum) and ask on there. those guys seem to know everything about everything.

I'm soon going to buy a new lcd screen and I've been wondering the same thing..
I will use it with my laptop so I wonder if its more sensible to buy 1 24" or 2 smaller lcds? Having 2 smaller lcds will be a little more expensier since I will have to buy that thing which separates the output (costs about 200€)..

The next thing is I really dont have much space left on my table so I think going for 24" lcd is a better option..

What do you guys think?

Thanks for help
Magnus
Go with 2 LCDs. The more screen space the better. Right now I'm using 1 19inch CRT running at 1600x1200 and one 24" LCD running at 1920x1200 and I still run out of space. I use 2 applications at once via rewire so 2 seperate screens is a total must. I want to get a matching 24" to the one I already have but gotta save up first.
