HELP: Technical Difficulties

Okay so sometime last week I realized that my internet browsers (Firefox and Internet explorer) had stopped playing sounds... an example being I can watch an youtube video but there's no sound.

I tried googling it looking for what the problem could be as well as a solution in different tech help forums without any success. I downloaded all plugins, uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and nothing has worked. Does anyone know what may be happening?

The only thing I did prior to this problem was downloading and installing itunes. could that have anything to do with it??

I am completely clueless as to what is wrong and any help is appreciated!

ps. sorry for posting this here... i figured i'd give it a try before taking my computer in...

check your options in tools, internet options, advanced options, then scroll down multimedia and make sure play sounds is checked (internet explorer) ...u can also try safari ,, apples browser,, and make sure u have flash and windows media plugins updated ..also check your sound card, make sure u have lastest drivers

This is going to be obvious, so excuse me - but have you checked the volume settings?

Click on the little speaker in the system tray make sure all the volumes are up.

Then click on Options->Properties and make sure everything is enabled for your device (and then repeat the check of volume).

FOR some reason this thread title and seeing you name beside it as the maker made me laugh my ass off outloud here at work!

I couldnt wait to see what was contained in it Lars!! :D :haha:

Anyways, question:

Can you hear music/sounds from other programs... like iTunes?

Bc you only mentioned you couldnt hear sounds in IE/Firefox, but just as likely you cant hear sounds at all.

So many under your Volume Coutrol your sound checked off as muted, or maybe ur speakers are h4X0red -- either turned off or down low or just busted!?

okay i can play audio files on itunes and windows media player... i've checked the options on IE and firefox and everything seems fine. I also checked my volume controls and everything is fine (listening to music right now).

Now in addition to my original problem of no sound on IE/firefox, i just tried to play a downloaded video on Windows media player as i usually do and it is playing the audio file but no image. It appears to be an error: "A codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help." but when i click on web help nothing happens.......... argh

usually when u goto a video sharing site, there are links to the codecs,, which are required to play the web videos. Just goto this site, it has all in 1 codec package..

this should fix you girl.

Id also recommend installing the latest DivX program... you'll get all the related codexs that come w/ it, which is a good number to play most files im assuming you'd play habibi.

is this all in 1 codec download gonna solve both of my problems? or only the latter?

exstasie
Yeah,

Codecs issues suck.

Codecs compress and decompress the audio/video file so that it will play back on your computer. But if you don't have the proper codecs then you won't be able the video/audio or both.

Most sites use standard codecs that you can get from the above links or the programs should already contain the codecs (ie. WMP, Divx Player) etc.

Some videos might require a specific codec, which you can usually find if you right click on the video and check in the properties of the video. It'll show which codecs are required to view/listen.

Also try upgrading your windows Explorer updates. I know that was the issue i use to have back in my PC days.

download vlc player, if your file doesnt play in that, its probably not just not going to play. if it plays an dthere is no sound, check your sound settings and stuff
