Is that a Hard drive? or a CD drive. Sounds weird, sounds suspicious...did you try a virus scan and spyware scans? :( |

| See if you can right click on the drive and choose "Explore" |

1) what type of drive is it? (CD, DVD, hard drive, zip drive, etc)
2) turn off your computer and unplug the power. Important: when you unplug your computer, it takes another 10 seconds for the capacitors in the power supply to actually discharge. DO NOT touch any components for at least 10 seconds after unplugging the computer. open up the case and unplug the power and data connector from the drive that isn't working. Close the computer and restart it, then shut it down again and unplug it. Reconnect the drive and turn it back on. Sometimes this fixes these kinds of problems because the computer "forgets" what the drive is completely, and then it recognizes it correctly when you plug it back in.
always be careful when handling computer parts and be sure to ground yourself by touching the metal of the computer CASE before touching anything. don't want to accidentally destroy something with static. |

Actually, unplugging your PC is the wrong thing to do and it's a mistake SO many people make.
You want your PC plug into a grounded outlet when you're opening it up and working inside it to carry voltage away from you and the PC.
You are supposed to unplug the powersupply from the motherboard.
If your PC case is painted, then touching simply the case won't work. Always say touch the power supply or any wall power outlet near you.

there's a lot wrong with the physics behind your logic. voltage is a potential, what matters is only the difference. grounding yourself to the case is literally equal to grounding both yourself and the case to the same external ground.
and yes, of course you have to touch exposed metal, I didn't think that "touch the metal of the case" would lead anyone to think that touching paint instead would still work.
the fix I suggested is a good one to try regardless. |

| cool details, meguiars... is this a recently installed drive or has it worked in the past? what type of drive and what kind of interface are you using? uide, scsi, sata? also what chipset is your southbridge and what os are you using? and if it's a disk drive, has it been formatted using the same file system? |
