Dude, I have been in the scene since 2000. And let me tell you, the Charlotte scene sucks ass....yeah they occassionally get a good dj there but other than that, it is always breaks...breaks, breaks, and more breaks...Breaks is not awful but to me, people who are so fond of breaks, their musical tastes just never progressed...That is what alot of people come in on....
Oh, and if you like going to the same club every weekend - Eden - then yeah Charlotte is the place for you. And the people there (from what I saw) are more about just getting totally ed up than they are in appreciating the dj's and music itself (hence the love for local no-name breaks dj's) and the same gerbil-wheel club every weekend.
I dated a girl up there over the summer and went up there to "shows". But I have lived in Atlanta here for 2.5 years. Let me authoritatively tell you Charlotte sucks ass...The people, the music - everything (at least in the EDM scene). Atlanta on the other hand is great...Great variety of music, events happening in different clubs, and open-minded people who know their dj's, who know how to dj, and are there for the music and the scene... |

Yeah, I agree with you about Charlotte. There are a lot of people who have never ventured past Breaks, and who were taught by their friends that 'rolling' is the only way to go when it comes to EDM. Its sad to see so many people getting off more on the visuals and blacklights than on the music. I get an average of 3 "Do you have any rolls/beans/[insert MDMA slang term here]?" whenever I go to Eden, if I forget to shave that day :wtf:
Its tough on the promotion/mixing side of things in NC since I spin House. All of the 'ravers' here go to see their favorite local Breaks DJ, but will not come out to a House event. We are counter-acting this by booking some good Breaks DJs as headliners, then having the House/Psy/etc DJs playing before or after the Breaks guys. Hopefully we'll open the ears of some of the people that would otherwise not know EDM outside of Breaks, and we like to have variety in our shows. Unfortunately, booking a show with no Breaks DJs = no turnout (we've made that mistake before!). Also, finding locals who DON'T do Breaks is hard (I think Gex and I are the only two House DJs in Hickory :D )
On the other hand, if you love Breaks then NC is the place for you, with DJ Icey, Baby Anne, and any other major Breaks DJs you can think of playing in the area multiple times each year... |

One thing you have to think of is who is promoting the party. Lets compare to Atlanta a couple years back. If you went to a Vinyl Boy party at the globe, you could expect breaks. If you went to a Liquified party at the Riveria or 1150 you could expect something good in the way of progressive or trance. Same goes for Charlotte, If you goto a SPINDICATED party at Eden, expect nothing but breaks. If you went to a Sugar Society event at the Forum expect something good. Sugar Society does also bring the breaks DJs because there is profit to be made but they will also bring talent that there is no way possible to make money with such as the LAZARO CASANOVA party or the Party with treasure fingers. If you only know someone with an ear for breaks then you might not get a chance to hear what else Charlotte has to offer.
Yeh, we do have mostly breaks but we do get some good talent at clubs other than eden. Such as Sander at the forum, or digweed at the forum, heck we even have the one + one tour up here. In 2003 and 2004 we had pvd and tiesto come through. Yeh it was a while ago but it can and will happen again. Just not on the bi-yearly ways Atlanta is used to.
If your moving due to financial reasons the you are correct, move south of the boarder and commute into work each day. The traffic on I-77 north into Charlotte isnt as bad as Atlanta's traffic but it was enough to make me buy a house in the Charlotte city limits. I think I found after budgeting that it was cheaper for me to move to where I did and now it only takes me 30 mins to drive into Center city each morning for work.
I love Charlotte, nice and peaceful, good parties do come through and when you get bored, the 4 hour drive to Atlanta isnt that bad.

This is quite common in NC. Every time this year Baby Anne or Icey has been brought to Charlotte and Greensboro a Trance DJ has played right after them. The only exception will be this coming NYE. Said DJs were unavailable to play that night. Another example is a progressive and a hard house DJ opened for Rabbit in the moon show |

there's a great new club in charlotte called Hom. i would bet it's the best venue there. ive been to fabric and i must say the sound at Hom is truly amazing. it's a unique layout...there is a "study" room that is like something out of the royal tenenbaums. there is a nice terrace as well as a gorgeous basement lounge.
i dunno if this is the sort of venue that would book trance, but for some good house, minimal, techy stuff, i think it's a fantastic choice. they recently had lee burridge and phil k there. oh, and the staff was very nice.

I live in charlotte and I am so sick of the same breaks/DnB shows all the time. Icey, Baby Anne, Dieselboy, I've seen them so many times, whenever a show is announced I don't even care & don't even think about going anymore. Those shows are always the same annoying crowd at the same annoying clubs (scorpios or eden).
I agree that the Charlotte scene sucks, but every now and then a big show is announced at the forum. I always go to those... in the last 5 months I've seen MSTRKRFT, Digweed, Zabiela/Fanciulli & Sander K. BT will be here on Dec 27th, but other than that... That's about it. I'm suprised I haven't heard anything about Hom... seems like I would have known that burridge was here. Hopefully they book some more in the future. |

Please explain. I never heard of this place or its owners:conf:
Fictional: In hindsight I am really glad that I got to see MSTRKRFT as the openers for Digweed. That duo tore the place down, and I wouldn't have known about them otherwise...
I think the Breaks/DnB parties would be better if the big name talent changed a bit, like when LTJ Bukem came to Raleigh last year. It'd be nice to see someone other than Icey, or Baby Anne, or Dieselboy as a headliner (there are plenty more headliners out there!) |

DreamBeamz--Hom is not owned by racists, I can assure you. The partners include the previous partners of Tonic-James Funderburk and Andre Ariaz.
Apparently there were some issues with the owners of the previous nightclub, Menage, that used to be in this space.
This is an entirely new club entirely unaffiliated with the previous owners.
The new owners spent major bucks on the sounds system, and it's been nominated as one of the best in the country, as was the system at Tonic. You've got to hear it to believe it. Fire pits on the patio, and a chill lounge downstairs. Open til 4am weekends. It was packed last Saturday |

i thought Latorre still owned all that property. Anyhow, good news on it being the tonic people I guess.
