Freezing rain warning for
City of Toronto continued

..Significant freezing rain arriving into southwestern Ontario overnight spreading northeast Sunday..

This is a warning that an extended period of freezing rain is imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A major winter storm from Colorado is now over Nebraska and is moving towards the Great Lakes. This winter storm has a large area of heavy snow and freezing rain associated with it extending from the Colorado and Nebraska areas all the way up to the Great Lakes and Northern Ontario. The leading edge of the snow has arrived in the Windsor area right on time around 6 PM this evening and will continue to March steadily northeast across the district tonight reaching the greater Toronto area around 10 PM this evening and the national capital area by early Sunday morning.

Over southwestern Ontario the snow will change over to ice pellets and freezing rain beginning near midnight. 5 centimetres of snow and ice pellets will likely fall over southwestern Ontario by Sunday morning before the precipitation changes over to rain while closer to 15 centimetres of snow mixed with ice pellets is possible over areas close to the Niagara Escarpment.

The wintery mix of precipitation will move east towards cottage country and the greater Toronto area tonight with the majority of the freezing rain and ice pellets falling on Sunday. The greater Toronto area will see 10 centimetres of snow before the snow ice pellets and freezing rain changes over to rain Sunday afternoon.

Northeast of a line extending from Midland to Peterborough to Kingston the precipitation will remain frozen. As a result the snowfall amounts will be higher with 5 to 10 centimetres falling tonight and another 10 to 15 Sunday. The snow will become mixed with freezing rain and ice pellets Sunday night.

Regions over eastern Ontario including Ottawa and Gatineau will not see snow beginning until Sunday morning with the heaviest snow falling Sunday night into Monday morning. The snow will be mixed with ice pellets and possibly freezing rain especially in the Ottawa and St Lawrence valleys. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres are possible by Monday morning with an additional 10 to 15 by Monday evening.

Dangerous winter travelling conditions are expected across Ontario as the snow may possibly be heavy at times which can cause brief whiteout conditions. Furthermore roads will be snow covered and slippery due to freezing rain and ice pellets. Travel plans should be altered accordingly.

At this point in time there is still uncertainty in the track of the low into the Great Lakes Sunday. If the low tracks further north a higher percentage of the precipitation will fall as rain. Alternately if the low tracks further south the snowfall amounts will be higher than currently indicated in the forecast.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation as new information arrives.

Winter storm warning for
City of Toronto continued

..Snow mixed with freezing rain through the afternoon and evening..

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A major winter storm from Colorado is moving over the Great Lakes. This winter storm will continue to bring widespread snow over cottage country to eastern Ontario. Regions near Lake Ontario north to cottage country will continue to see periods of freezing rain before changing over to rain and or wet snow this evening.

Regions over eastern Ontario including Ottawa and Gatineau will continue to see snow today with the heaviest snow falling tonight into Monday morning. Snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres are possible by Monday morning with an additional 10 to 20 by Monday evening.

Dangerous winter travelling conditions are expected across Ontario as the snow may possibly be heavy at times which can cause brief whiteout conditions. Furthermore roads will be snow covered and slippery due to freezing rain and ice pellets. Travel plans should be altered accordingly.

As the winter storm moves across eastern Ontario on Monday brisk northwesterly winds will generate snow squalls to the Lee of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. These snow squalls will start early Monday morning before gradually decreasing in intensity by Tuesday morning. The squalls have the potential to produce snow at the rate of 15 to 20 centimetres every 12 hours.

There is the possibility that some of these snowsqualls can briefly penetrate further inland and reach areas such as the greater Toronto area Kitchener..And even Simcoe county on Monday.

Travellers are advised to use extreme caution when travelling in these areas as the snow squalls can produce zero visibilities in snow and blowing snow along with very slippery road conditions.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation as new information arrives.
