Studio Reference Monitors.. What to buy?
View this Thread in Original format

I'm currently looking to buy a new pair of monitors. Didn't see too many threads on the subject of studio reference monitors on here.. The one's I found were mostly focused on normal hifi speakers and so on..

Which monitors would u suggest? What do u own? Which monitors out there are the 'top notch' ones?

Have you got any link to recent tests or reviews?

Thnx a bunch!

My advice is:

- try to listen to all the speakers in your price range, with tracks that you know well.

- buy as expensive speakers as your budget allows you to, or as expensive as you allow yourself.

- don't listen to what others say are the best speakers, as their views are usually biased by their own purchase - and they have their own personal taste in sound.

I see you're a fellow Norwegian, and sadly for us we don't have many good places to audition a wide range of speakers, like in Britain or the US. I did a thorough research when I was looking for my first pair - and since there was no way I was going to be able to listen to any speakers, I had to read my way to a decision.

My choices were Dynaudio bm6, bm5, Adam A7, Adam p11a, K&H O 110, Mackie hr828, hr624 and finally Focal Solo 6 and Twin 6. I chose The Focal twins, after almost deciding on going for the solo 6. I ultimately wanted the twins due to their extended bass response, even though they're quite expensive.

quested make good monitors. they my faves of the more affordable under £1000's and are better than the genelecs of the same cost. genelecs seam to be the most popular hi quality units.

Within 1000$ preferably.

Does anyone have any experience with these?:
M-Audio EX Series EX66

They seem pretty nice, with a wide sweet spot among other things..

its all in the stickies but i think KRK are amongs the most popular now adays.

I've looked through the stickies but haven't really found any spesific suggestions on what to buy. "As there are many quality products and quality brands, choosing the right one for you is going to require some research." And thats what Im doing now.. Researching :toocool:

I'll look more into the KRK ones. Thnx.

Thnx for the advice. I guess I'll read my way to a final decision as well, as Im too lazy to go and audition all the speakers one by one. I do know of quite a few places in Oslo where u can audition a certain number of monitors though...

Nevertheless, I do like hearing others opinions :)

Adam S3A.

But they will cost you around $3000...each...:p

For your budget the Adam A7s are meant to be quite good, although they dont have as much bass as, say, Mackie HR624s. If you can afford Mackie/Adam/Dynadio/Genelec then I would definately not get M-Audios tbh...

And whatever you do, you should ideally listen to all of them so you can see which you prefer before buying anything...
