Water, food, oxygen, etc. They all have problems, it's not just one "ultimate" that s us over. Though I guess that was the point of st3nc's post. I never fair too well nor do I have much of an interest in these types of discussions, so I'll just back out now. |

You could also get into the specifics with Chemistry...and think about all the differnt complex Chemicals, hormones, vitamins, and elements that we need...
if we could design a Meal Pill...or somethin that gave us the PERFECT combo...it would also help reduce inefficency..thus prolonging our bodies and our Lives |
This kind of thing might help, but ultimately the same reality that led to the amazing achievements of evolution (namely, imperfect reproduction, i.e. mutation) is what gets us in the end. Cells accumulate lots of junk and things go haywire, regardless of the quality of diet. |

Yes, true.
Thus the Anomie of Life gets us again.
But if humans are truely searching for immortality...we need to take it one step at a time...streeeeetching out our lives. |

Of course.
I think the big jump will come with the transfer of minds to digital media (and lots of people still dispute whether that's even possible). But even when you're a robot or some kind of software on a giant computer, fully "repairable," it seems like there are fundamental limits to how long you can stretch out your life. Which was kind of the point of this thread.
Another troublesome limit might just be traveling from one galaxy to another in search of new energy. Galaxies are really far apart, and there's almost nothing at all in between them; the closest one to us is about 25,000 light years away, a damn long trip to make when there's no way to refuel in the middle of the journey. And since the universe is expanding, galaxies are only getting further and further apart as we speak. |

We will Birth A.I. eventually....i firmly believe that...
It will happen once we figure ourselves out. We just need to build 1 outlet for A.I., and control its ability to procreate, so that it must rely on us...
Then hopefully it can interact with us...and work with us to create more...
I read a BUNCH of Orson Scott Card, he uses alot of the same concepts... I find this some of the most facinating subject to talk about. Just because the ty inefficent systems that humans have made, make living in this Age very frustrating.
Then again a person of my status is given VERY limited responsiblities... |

Well, that brings to mind another problem. Once you have beings that are (in principle) always "repairable," you run into a massive problem of overpopulation. The more people you have, the more energy your civilization will require. If there are fundamental limits on the amount of usable energy in the universe, more reproduction ultimately means a shorter life for your civilization. So if you're a "repairable" person, what do you do? Ban people from reproducing in the interest of prolonging your own lifespan?

Indeed, a good point...
I assume we are gonna start throwing satelittes around the Sun, as well as other Stars...equipped with high-tek solar plates...
Hopefuly someone can figure out a way to concentrate this energy, so that it travels to us faster that the speed of light...
Maybe using disorder, and how energy is always trying to go towards disorder...to trap the energy and beam it to locations...
We are just stuck with "speed of light" nowadays...weak sauce |
