Good / Bad Idea ?

Thinking of upgrading my computer soon, but unsure exactly of what I want to go for as of yet.
I use my computer for numerous things, music / video / gaming etc..., I want to get a set of monitors to be able to have a good reference for my productions and also want to get a good soundcard for the monitors, but also I would quite like to have 5.1 for playing dvd's / games etc, so would a seperate soundcard / 5.1 speaker system be a good idea?, im just not sure if having 2 soundcards in the one machine would cause any problems.
Is this a bad idea / waste of money, or is it a reasonable route to take ?
Thanks in advance!!! |

| Most likely your computer has built in sound that is 5.1, you can always add another soundcard to use for production. You can make two profiles one for watching movies, gaming, etc and one strictly for production. Have the 5.1 soundcard enabled in your movie/gaming profile, and have the other one enabled for your production profile. |

Quite some months ago, I had a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro + an M-Audio Audiophile installed and this worked without problems.
Only sometimes I forgot to switch the output while playing a game :)
I guess it depends a little bit on how the drivers are installed... But I wouldn't call myself an expert. |
