What are the most important things to look for when buying a new camera? I have been doing a little research, and some of the terms are lost on me.

I know when I went to Best Buy the guy said that getting anything over a 8.0 mega pixel is a waste of money, but I have heard from others that he is wrong. I want to find something that is good in both day and night settings (planning to travel this summer but also want to take pics of nights out on the town). I have heard terms like "DSLR cameras are better" and such but have no idea wtf that is!! haha!! Questions such as these.......

I am particularly looking for the best quality of pictures while keeping the actualy camera small-ish in size (sorry no bulky cameras for me!) I dont need a SUPER skinny one but no professional-sized cameras.

I also dont mind putting some money into a camera but I wanna set my budget at $500-600 MAX.

^Sorry I know there is a camera thread out there somewhere, but I wasnt able to locate it. ANy info would help guys!!

I got mine for $200, I think $500 on a camera might be to much camera for you right now and the more mega-pixels the better, better quality pictures come out, but you don't really need to go over 8.0 for what you are looking for.

I figured. I just dont know who to trust because people keep telling me different . all I want is a seriously good camera that is not too fat!! haha! I found this thin Canon camera for $399 that had 12 megapixels.....wondering if it was worth the money.

(btw I dont necessarily want to spend that much, but I want to find exactly what I am looking for. If I can find that in $200 I will be down!!!)

btw: I fb'd you :)

I hate to say it, but u got robbed paying $200 for ure cam. Ive seen the pics u take with them and the quality isnt that great with all the blurry shots. Then again, the person whose takin the pics might be the reason for that, who knows. :p All I know is for $200, a SONY(I have a sony right now) is def. the way to go. Takes good pics and has kick ass video feature. Of course if u want a better more expensive cam, then ya, Nikon is the brand of choice but really, a $200 SONY is more practical for the everyday use. Hope that helps Kell. ;)

#1 - 8.0 megapixels is perfect. You may on occasion, depending on the size of prints you are going to make, get reduced quality on anything bigger. e.g., if you print 4x6" shots and you have a 12 megapixel camera, the folks will look a cartoony in the printout.

#2 - You want night shots. Get Image Stabilization. Often labeled with an "IS" at the end of Canon names. e.g., PowerShot SD870 IS. It allows you to get better night shots because it prevents camera shake (to a certain extent)

#3 - Get Canon. Best color saturation compared to most brands.

For your needs. Get the PowerShot SD870 IS. It's between $300-400

For night shots or shots without flash get the Fujifilm f31fd/F30 if you can find one. Goto Dpreview or dcresources.com to read review/flamewars and look at great picture taken by those users. Also checkout flickr to see what kind of pictures can be achieve by the camera u are looking for. the canon sd870is and sd850is are also good. But more megapixels does not equal bester pictures.

I took these with my f31fd without flash

for small cameras i've been very happy with the results from the canon powershot sd800is. that's what i use when clubbing for me, rather than clubbing for work.

also, check out the extensive and detailed reviews at dpreview.com .
