Progressive Drum/Percussion Tips

Hey all...

Lately I have gone back through my collection and have been digging some old Progressive type tracks by the likes of Mauro Picotto and Marco V. I've always been interested in the drums and percussion in Progressive tracks and wanted some tips on how to get that progressive sound. I want to expand my use of drums in my tracks and have started by trying to duplicate some of the sounds that the mentioned artists have created.

I was wondering if anybody could share any tips on creating that distinct Progressive sound? Obviously there are a lot of off beat sounds/effects to give it that "broken up" sound but I'm not sure what sounds are generally used and where to place them. Frankly my drums are starting to sound quite boring as most of the time I am sticking to the typical 4 to the floor drum format.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

The last time I made something "progressive" sounding, it was entirely the ducking that made it work...

I like ducks... Unfortunately, they'll swarm you like pirahnas once you realize how overused they are.

Ahh I see... By "ducking" do you mean side-chain compression??

Marco V and Mauro Picotto = Progressive?

Am I missing something?

As a tip, I would look for some tribal house and then try emulating those patterns but substituting more electronic sounds (rather than the bongo's etc used in Tribal house). By the way, it will be pretty difficult to get away from the 4/4 - it sounds like you need to look in to more drum prgramming styles. Try spectrasonics stylus and use less conventional "trance" drum loops and layer them. this should give you a completely different feel of rhythm.

honestly. i am trying to do the same thing right now. and im really kinda stuck on a few EQ things.. I feel like EQ is a lot. to bring out some sounds. or to throw em in the backround..
