I think it's been covered a couple million times that this will not be Godzilla 2. If it was, I would cry because Godzilla itself was one of the worst remakes ever.

2a. A Japanese soft drink company creates a popular soft drink called Slusho, using a secret ingredient they stumbled upon in the deep ocean. That new ingredient causes the mutation.
It's not at all supposed to be explained in the movie (the early reviews say this), but the online viral campaign details it much more in depth. I'm guessing it's part of the new "experience" JJ wants to bring to film, extending beyond the 2 hours in the theater (ie, Trent Reznor's new approach to music)
