Well, this xmas I'm going to buy a Midi Keyboard or a pair of Studio Speakers.
Ive heard many people saying that studio speakers were the best thing they bought etc... but, I've also heard many good stuff about midi keyboards (and dont forget that with a midi keyboard, we get much more motivated, cause sometimes we just feel bored, drawing notes with the mouse...)
So, which one, in your opinion, should I buy?
Thanks. |

a set of speakers will cost twice to three times as much as a keyboard... just so you know.

looking at about 440 euro for a set of budget 6"s.
I'd go with the midi controller, until you know whether or not you like this hobby. |

Yeah, I'm aware of that... maybe that's why I'll buy a midi keyboard instead. I just have around 300€ atm
what would you choose, in this situation? maybe the keyboard, cause it's useless to waste money on some ty speakers?and mb in 1 year or more  buy the speakers...?
or should wait more 6 months or smth like that and then buy the speakers?
Thanks for the fast reply;) |

Sorry....but this ^^^ is not quite true. Even though a midi controller will indeed cost less, you can pick up great monitors for only just a tiny bit more than 300eu....
Behinger Truth
I actually hate nearly all Behringer stuff, as they are usually cheap and nasty nock off's but Behringer really got this one right. My next purchase. |

Which do you think is more of a problem for you now? Production sound quality or composing? |

I had the same dillema a few months ago and went for the keyboard - for me composing is way more important than perfect sound. I understand that one needs to maintain a good production quality and fat sound but I'm still a bigger fan of original and interesting melodies. And a keyboard will help you with that a lot. :) |

save the money for monitors imo, whether u gonna produce or not its always nice with speakers that sounds good, and u are into music as consider this anyway. midikeyboard is boring. |
so true.
a boring keyboard that doesnt make any sounds. if it was a hardware keybord synth then id get that, but use the pencil to draw in notes and get some monitors so you can hear what you are doing. |

In terms of getting what you pay for, that is really a given in most situations but the Truths really are the best monitors at that price and even beat the out of a lot of speakers 2-300 eu more expensive, so really you're getting more than you pay for. Check out the amount of people on here (for example I think storyteller used them for a long while and his stuff sounds incredible)
Firstly, you're comparing different things: off the top of my head, I can probably only name about 5 midi (only) controllers that cost more than 300 eu, where as I can easily name 30 odd monitor speakers that cost more than 300eu. At this budget, you're looking at the top end of one type of equipment (controllers) and the lower end for another (monitors)
Secondly, in terms of creativity, a midi controller is far more useful. You can use a pair of hi fi speakers to write tracks as long as you have the means to produce a track (midi controller, soft synths etc.). But unless you are going to draw every single midi note with the mouse or use only samples (and having said that I know people who have released doing only these but it's rare), the midi controller will be far more important. You can always write the track on crap speakers or headphones then take it someone with a decent monitoring set up for the mix/fx etc..
Also, as for not going for a keyboard because it doesn't have any built in sounds - a midi controller can make any sound you want it to with the right software......but then again I have a feeling you were joking anyway :toothless |

I'd go with speakers because most of the time my midi keyboard sits in the closet while my monitors are in constant use. |

Look around for both?
Get a cheap Ozone controller and used monitors for around 300? |

Get a midi controller first, then save up for some nice monitors. A keyboard will help you quite a bit when coming up with ideas. |
