If you're looking for cheap improvements...
1) check your doors - make sure the draft stops at the bottom of each is properly set so that it forms a seel with the door jamb, if it doesn't you can probably adjust it using only a screw driver. If you cannot then go get new ones.
2) foam tape is your friend... line your door jambs with foam tape to act as a gasket on all exterior doors. if you have drafts from your windows this can help on window frames too.
3) spray foam insulation - shoot some of this in any cracks you have in your walls or window frames.
4) change your furnace filter.
5) get a programable digital thermostat, set it to lower temps for times when no one is home or when sleeping.
6) clean your ducts - greater efficiency in heating. |

i've thought about installing one of those for a while now but i'm afraid the install might be tricky since we're in an older house. i did it once before but it was right after we had remodeled our upstairs back home so everything was brand new. |

This sounds like a no-brainer, but many times a red couch with lots of cat toys underneath it, chair, or bed moved during the summer stays there in winter, blocking the flow of heat into the room. This wastes money and leads to cold rooms. With a forced-air system, blocking a supply or return vent can cause a house-wide pressure imbalance that disrupts the heat flow in the whole system. |
