Mixing using your iPod
View this Thread in Original format
FromAbove
Okay, I'm new to mixing and DJing as you may notice. I've seen these iPod mixers some companies are selling. Apparently you plug your iPod into the mixer and use tracks inside of the iPod and mix them. Obviously. But I have a program I purchased a while ago called Traktor DJ Studio that integrates the iPod and allows you to mix track directly on the program.

My main question is; would using this way to bring together music be appropriate for parties and such? I have a feeling you all despise iPod mixing.

Yikes.

well the ones i have seen u need 2 ipods. so the price of 2 new ipods is whatl ike 550USD. u could buy a nice package deal of some cheap ass TT's or CD players and a mixer for that much. Just putting tht out there. I personal hate DJ's that just go up there with and ipod and play tracks off it. It's like wow, could u put any less effort into it?

Isn't there an iDJ V2 where you can use only one iPod?

Ok before we go any further... if you buy ipods you defenitly lack the intelligence to be a DJ (if it was a gift however you might get away with it... so I'd probably use that). They are terribly overpriced and worse then other mp3 players. Apart from that... theres no difference between using an Ipod or your hdd for songs.

Seriously why did anyone ing recomend buying another overpriced pos? 320gb external HDD=80 bucks

+1. But that panda needs to handle his records a little better...

Dark: A bit rough on him, eh?

I would not recommend getting an iPod mixer. Even if you already have two iPods you would not want to try to mix tracks on a piece of gear with plastic controls and toy-like build qualities. Maybe in a few years the build quality of the things will improve, but until then I would get some decent reliable gear. Also, mixing with iPods looks really unprofessional.

Maybe there's a way to plug your iPod into a CDJ-400? I know it has a USB port, so you could buy an external hard drive or any MP3 player that uses USB and use that with those decks.

Or, since you already have Traktor, you could get a MIDI controller and use Traktor through that for your mixes.

Yes there is.

The first numark iDJ V1 used two iPods... and it doesn't have PITCH CONTROL... So with two iPods, you can basically just fade from track to track. Totally stupid.

The iDJ V2 basically buffers the tracks in it's own hardware, and does support pitch control. So you CAN actually mix.

The CDJ-400 DOES support iPods, but since the CDJ-400 can't share files from one deck to the other, you'd still need two, and they cost around $700 each anyway. Not cost effective for a "party" setup.

If you have a laptop, look at something like the M-Audio Xponent and Vestax VCI-100. The Xponent at least has everythign you need in one package (controller, soundcard, software). The Vestax requires an external soundcard.

Vestax also has a tiny little VCM-100 controller that HAS a soundcard built in. Looks pretty sweet.

It will cost you about $600 or so to get any sort of laptop DJ setup (not including the cost of the laptop) that's not a piece of junk toy.

You can get the Xponent for $419 on on amazon .

here

Such a good price I'm seriously thinking about picking it up. Only problem is I have a good mixer now and if I got the xponent my mixer would pretty much end up going to waste.

Dang that IS a great price.

Why hate on the iPod? I'm on an 80 gig one now and have been using them since 2002.

You can't find an easier to use combination of hardware and software with a wider range of third party accessories.

iTunes + iPod = win win, because iTunes + DVS (traktor, torq, serato) = win win.

If you use a Mac, it makes even more sense (iTunes on Mac is definitely nicer than on Windows). And judging by all the Macbook's you see in booths, I'm quite sure all those DJ's aren't idiots.

But buying two to DJ with IS a dumb idea.

Exactly. You can also drop iTunes playlists straight into Ableton.
