Thank God (lol) my parents didn't teach us about religion.

Something I thought about recently: Growing up in a Christian family, I knew about the story of the virgin birth as far back as I can remember. But I also had no concept of what sex involved and I didn't know that people had to have sex in order to have babies. So I couldn't have known why the virgin birth was supposed to be a miracle. No one ever sat me down and told me, "Mary had a kid without ever having had sex," and I never drew the conclusion myself until long after learning about the story of the virgin birth.

I guess I just knew that everybody said it was "a miracle," so I accepted that it was, and I never reflected on how it was supposed to be "miraculous."

:p

I had no idea what "virgin" meant until I was in middle school. I knew it was supposed to be a miracle because I was taught God was Jesus' dad but, that's all :D

Probably the best reaction I've ever seen was from a Japanese exchange student. When she first heard about it, she was flabbergasted. She then asked us how people could tell children that sort of stuff, because it was incredibly wrong :p

In Paul Ehrlich's Human Natures, he describes how Inuit men laughed uproariously when Arctic explorers told them about the "virgin birth."

I learned in Hebrew school that God put the baby inside Mary (as opposed to a man putting in an erect penis). I wonder why they taught me this in Jew school????

I predict within 10 years it'll be commonplace for lesbian couples to go to a lab and have one of their eggs converted into a sperm cell, thus eliminating the need for the male part of the birth equation.

And in 20 years, science will probably find some way for a man to give birth to a child. But why any man would want to experience that, is beyond me.

what i find miraculous is that people believe that .

seriously, why would god need to impregnate ANYONE to have a child? seems like more work than necessary.

Most of the techonology to produce an egg cell from a stem cell has already been worked out, and there's already artificial wombs that've worked for some smaller mammals. I think it's more a question of ethics than technology.

Isn't culture amazing?

I find it really weird that most people around us think of giant tortoises as being idiotic, but they're completely comfortable with the thought of God impregnating innocent virgins in the Middle East :p
