Maybe I'm not alone in this, but I'm starting to get sick of christmas. Of course as I kid I loved every minute, got in the mood a month in advance and got into the whole holiday cheer, but then I just grew out of it. I'm not religious at all, so in that sense christmas never had any deep meaning for me. I was brought up celebrating christmas as a "cultural" event, but now I just don't see the point.
Every christmas, I get criticized for not being "in the spirit" by ing hypocrits who use this time of the year to try and convince themselves and others that they're decent people by doing things that they wouldn't do any other time of the year. Everything about it is dishonest.
I get criticized because I refuse to go to family gatherings to see people I don't even like, opting instead to stay home by myself and get wasted on cheap whiskey - but of course, that isn't "okay" behavior for christmas day, so I keep having to deal with all these fake cheerful folks trying to drag me back into the christmas machine.
Giving presents is . One way or the other, you're going to receive some (by annoying cheerful brats who won't leave you alone about how great mas is), and if you haven't gotten them anything, you're going to feel like crap. So you're being forced into consuming for other people, who will in turn consume for others and feed an endless circle of consumerism ultimately leading into deficit (unless you're somehow cashing in on all this). I value my judgement as a consumer. Therefore, i'd much rather spend that money on myself, buying something I know I will appreciate. Let others do the same and everyone will be happier in the end.
Add all this to a healthy stack of bad memories, and the sound of a christmas tune is enough to bring me down completely. I'm not a particularly depressive type, but this season is an exception. January can't get here fast enough. | wow how pathetic. i enjoy getting together with family, eating good food, exchanging presents. iam not religious either, and i never get into the spirit of it all. i do enjoy the company of my friends and family during these times though.
maybe its that much more special to me because i live in atlanta, so when i get the chance to go to guatemala and have an evening with all my loved ones, i have a fantastic time. |

It would be kind of interesting if people still made gifts for each other. Would take away a lot of the whole "consumerism" angle and lead to much less debt as well... |
I still make my own cards :) :D |

I am the exact same way.
However, I am smart enough to keep my mouth shut for the most part. I don't 'hate' Christmas - I'm just not religious. I don't 'hate' my family - I'm simply not keen on buying them for their religious ceremonies. If you were smart, you'd have the good sense to just dismiss it as the worthlessness that it is rather than go around telling everyone how much you hate the holiday. |

Why do you see it as being a worthless day, I understand that you're atheist, but you're going too far with that statement. Christmas is a day of peace & gathering, where people get together and enjoy each other's company. I've had many guests who were atheist (my supervisor's family) Muslim & Jewish get together and enjoy Christmas at my old residency. I was at my friend's house in Manhattan a few year's back to celebrate the Jewish passover, great company & I'm in love with matza balls. It's not worthless, I enjoy spending my hard earned money for the holiday and seeing the smile on a person's face when they open up their gift(s). |

I'm actually not an atheist.
And I didn't mean to offend with the term 'worthless' (even though I can't be arsed to care if I do offend :p) but 'worth' is a determinant of the individual; the holiday has no value to me, so I do not see a need to celebrate it, but I am fully aware that the holiday has great value to others (though I very much doubt the religious or pronounced value in most people and am strongly suspect of just indulgence in prescribed consumerism).
That's awesome if you have a great time by just considering it a family sort of day. I hope you have a good time. I am just one of those ungrateful wretches who pushes their family away because their zeal and disposition disgusts them. I don't see a need to impose this temperament upon others though, so generally I will keep the holiday hatred to a minimum. It's also why I will be at work today and tomorrow. :p |

Hence why I keep my christmas venting to threads on internet forums full of people I don't know. ;) |
