Audiophile 2496 for vista

Hi all,
Don't know if it was mentioned, but m-audio FINALLY released the vista drivers for their most popular card, the audiophile 2496. I know a lot of producers were waiting for this.. find them here |

| It's about time! I switched over to an E-Mu 1212M when I switched to Vista. I haven't been happy with it. I hate the DSP Patchmix for the E-Mu. Now I can put the M-Audio 2496 back in. |

| Still no Vista 64bit (or XP64 for that matter) non-beta drivers for all their products :( |

| I have that same card but I'll be sticking with XP for a while. Curious to know why would anyone choose Vista as an OS to produce under? What advantages, if any, over XP does it have when you are talking about making music specifically? |

+1.I'd like to know too. I'm not a vista user but as far as I know, doesn't vista allow you to address more RAM, and use more processor cores effectively. |

this is the main one. 32bit vista has the same memory problems as 32bit xp.
i'm using vista because i FEEL that it supports newer hardware better. with things like sata controllers, etc. you need to use drivers in xp. in vista, they're part of the kernel afaik. xp doesn't even allow me to boot from my sata optical drive!
that said, i prefer xp. vista feels like windows 98, where your computer will just start grinding away at your hard drive for no apparent reason. performance wise, i haven't really noticed any differences. |

Thanks Echosystem! Exactly the sort of info I was looking for. So I take that it's only the 64bit version (both XP and Vista) that can address more than 4gig of RAM. Also, are you saying that you don't have to use device drivers (for things like the SATA controllers) because Vista has the necessary drivers built in to the OS? If so that is another good reason to switch becuase I hate the fact I have to spend half a day installing standard device drivers everytime I format in XP.
Where is Vista at in terms of service packs (has there even been one and are they still going to do that for Vista OS) |

I'm running a custom built PC with a Pentium Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz and 2GB of Corsair RAM @ 800mhz.
I use Vista Home Premium. I use Reason 4, Ableton 7 and a bunch of VST's and I have not had any issues at all. I am running as smooth as I ever did on XP. |

there is a public release candidate of SP1 online at the moment. they say the final release it will be due q1 2008. if you're not in a rush, i would wait for this service pack to get released so you can get a disc with the updates already in there.
i'm using vista home basic by the way (because i dont want aero etc. hogging my computer), so i can't speak for the performance of vista ultimate etc. |

Thanks, I think I will wait for the SP1 disk to be released. By the way what is Aero? |

aero is the new window manager with 3d effects and stuff. it looks cool, but the novelty wears off after about 10 minutes, at which point it just becomes annoying (because it is quicker to tab etc. without the effects) and a total waste of resources.
it's the equivalent of expose` and stuff in macosx. |

| I have Aero shut off. There is a great guide at www.tweakhound.com that I followed to turn off some unnecessary stuff in Vista. |
