His advisor was Jamaica Kincaid

Having Jamaica as a first-name = win.

This thread reminds me that while I try to keep myself relatively informed and consider myself to have a good amount of general knowledge, I never got into reading books after since I was 15 or so. Articles, magazines, all sorts of online, yes, just not taking a book and reading it. Maybe I could be less dumb by doing so.

Having the CORe picking a book for me to read seems like the ideal start. :gsmile:

Another suggestion, this one much shorter (roughly 140 pages):

The author was only 21, and as far as I know the book was the product of his senior Creative Writing project while at Harvard. His advisor was Jamaica Kincaid, and it was listed as one of Salman Rushdie's favorite books. The book itself is a narrative from the perspective of a child soldier, so it ought to foster some strong reactions.

This sounds like a good choice to me. Seems like it would generate lots of discussion.

Oh, and if that's the book we choose, be sure to edit the first post.
