Do they / would they ever create PCI (computer hardware) synthesizers?

Is it possible? I don't even know whether it has been done or can be done but it sounds kind of cool. Or something along the lines of usb/firewire synths/modules that act as the hardware but have a software environment and interface?

Has this been discussed at all? I mean, it could save LOADS of room but would such a technology be big/powerful enough to supply the different of sound when compared to fully software based synthesis?

I think Korg has done something like this called Oasys PCI synth but I'm not sure whether it is the type of thing I'm talking about.

Thoughts?

OASYS is a keyboard as far as I know, I think it might take PCI expansions. Its a bloody big beast, the best synth they make with teh guts of every other synth in it, like the triton, radius etc.

Thats the one I was thinking of:)

I'm not sure if I described my idea right but, more like just a small USB flash drive as the hardware itself. Probably not possible but just a thought. Same with the PCI card, just the size of a sound card.

is what I think you are talking about.

is probably the future for hardware workstations. But it's Windows only :-S

That HardSid thing is the size of a normal sound card I think. But I can't see why they would make a memory stick sized synth; for one thing you couldn't fit the components in there, for another there would be no point. Even if you could have a small DSP in there, it would only add more processing power. But if you could fit a worthwile amount of power in a USB stick, the technology would probably be so good that you wouldn't need it because your CPU would be so massive...
