I don't think that total GDP is "meaningless." It's sort of a proxy for total taxable income, which bears on what a country's government can accomplish.
GDP per capita is more useful in most cases, though. |

And actually, median income is even better at figuring out how most people in a country live (as opposed to the enormously rich top 10% of earners who skew the mean income upward). |
