Yes, you can be pregnant and not know it. A common misconception is that all women stop menstruating during pregnancy... some don't. And when you are as unhealthy as that woman, menstrual cycles can be irregular and weird.
However, not feeling the baby moving around is a little strange. Perhaps being so obese, it was hard to tell. I have never been really heavy, so I can't speculate.
