I know where it is...but was this girl at a club/bar? followed from one? were these guys at a club/bar or simply targeting that condo?
i.e. why report this as a sexual assault "in clubland" if a club/bar had nothing to do with it?
it's poor reporting, as many will see an implication is that it's yet another incident in the oh-so-dangerous entertainment district as opposed to a sexual assault in a residencial building.
lame catchy headline. |
like I said many times, the primary purpose of media is to make money |

exactly...which newspaper would you buy... "sexual assault in clubland" or "sexual assault outside condo residence" |
|

which is exactly why these businesses need to be better organized to combat the perception that the area is a crime-ridden hole.
also...if this is a condo, you need an access key/card to get in. does she live there? do they? pretty much every building has CCTV on exterior access points.
but the two things that will stand out from this story in people's heads is "sexaul assault" and "clubland" and if I was a business owner in the area, I wouldn't be very happy about that. |

damage was done back in 2000 when the media attacked anything related to a 'rave' as evil, and no one has done anything to combat that perception
when something becomes deeply entrenched in the public mind, it takes a lot to change that perception |

it may not have been a club, but that building is in what EVERYONE refers to and knows as the club/entertainment district.
if it happened in china town the headline would be sexual assault in china town, not sexual assault in the back of a building on spadina just north of dundas.
and lets be realistic here.. 100% are that the people involved were coming from one of the clubs in the area. |

140 Simcoe St is the corner of Richmond and Simcoe. It's a condo, but it's right in the club district. |
It's a very expensive condo building. Lots of "hotel"-style residences in there, renting out 2-bedroom fully furnished units for about $3,000 a month for traveling business people. There is def a key card of some sort in there (or a fob).
Referring to this as club land is plain wrong. If someone got assaulted at King and Wellington, noone would be saying: "another rape in financial district" - they'd be saying: another assault downtown |

I doubt the headline would not read "sexual assaut in Chinatown"...just like it wouldn't say Rosedale, Cabbagetown, Riverdale, etc...it would just say west side, east side, downtown, etc. Notice it didn't even say "entertainment district" but FURTHER reduced it to "clubland". Again...the evil evil clubs and the unsavoury people they bring to the area. It's getting pathetic.
and congrats on that completely unfounded assumption in your last remark...that's exactly what this type of reporting will insinuate to most people who read it ;) |

Its called 'Cognitive Consistency' and the same reason why you still hear Americans saying like "We fight for freedom!" even though the war has been lost for years. |

I thought the description of the men was pretty funny. If she had any idea, she would know that Sri Lankens and Middle Eastern people look nothing alike. Sound's made up. |

...if you're trashed enough to get in a downtown alleyway elevator with two strange men in the dead of night, I'm not suprised she's a little foggy on the details.
I'm actually suprised she lived long enough to get into trouble if she's that stupid. |
