Why does the fire start deep within the paper then? Surely his 'magic' hands would be the hot part? lol

My guess would be a chemical means, maybe oil covered sodium, which when bundled up in the paper dries off the oil uncovering the sodium thus slowly starting the fire. And the paper will be coated too.
