help a newbie to choose hardware synths
View this Thread in Original format
supernewbie
I am so happy because my father finally got some heritage from his father and he agreed to support my music hobby (with money)! So i decided that i want to buy few hardware synths but I have problems with choosing them!

I am thinking following items:

virus ti
sh201
studio electronics atc-x quad filter system!
waldorf pulse from ebay?

and some nice studio monitors and other stuff but...

The virus would be my main synth and I have always wanted it but now i am thinking that everyone has one. Could there be any alternatives for it like, radias?

And how about the sh201 how about 2nd hand jp8k or nl3 from ebay?

Virus TI. I love my Polar! There's a very good reason that nearly every trance producer you've ever heard uses one. That said, I've also been contemplating adding an SE synth to my arsenal, so I wouldn't blame you for going that route. The Pulse is alright, but doesn't compare to the TI or the SE. I've got a buddy who owns an SH201 and it's pretty much a toy compared to the others - I wouldn't recommend it.

Are u are aware that these Synths aren't in the same price category ?!
I have the Sh 201 its good its great for a start its not hard to program and if you are good u can do with it everything

The Ti is the F1 of the hardware synths these days i want to get one myself but i will wait becasue i think they will release something new soon (just guesses )

The Nl3 is an amazing Synth and its not replaced by the Wave IMO The NL3 line cant be replaced

See what u an get for your budget..hope this helps
Beyer
I'd recommend you listening to a lot of demo clips of each synth you're considering. I was really close on buying the virus ti, but in the last minute I chose the Andromeda instead. I love its sound, and imo it's uncomparable in terms of sound quality to any VA synth. I will definitely be buying analog synths in the future. A little fatty and the prophet 8 are both on my wish list!

Bottom line is that you need to think about what sound you're after, and then see what synth will give you what you need.

i agree with Khayat to get the SH201 to start with as it has a good price and u start making leads emidiately - pluss that it actualy has great sound, tho abit limited functions/efex. I have never tried virus TI but Im still learning my older virus and i had it a year already so I assume TI is not a neebie synth either. U might find out that u want a mac or something for the money instead.

put the money in the bank. buy something when you get a clue. it's one thing to ask for advice re: the nuances of a synth, but you're basically asking us to spend your money for you.

work out what YOU need, then buy that.

Why would you ever take anyone's word in this thread about what synth to buy? Would you go out and buy a car because someone said it was good without test driving it yourself?
kopi_luwak
Go to the store and tryout all the synths, then if you like one go to ebay and see if you find one half used and buy it.

Kopi =o.

???

The guy is asking for opinions on Synths. That's part of what this forum is about; Opinions on gear and how to use it.

Where in his post did he say that he's going to take anyone's word for anything and buy a synth just because he was told to?

Geez, why don't you try offering something constructive (if you have anything to offer). If not, maybe you shouldn't have posted.

I second that

honestly, I think if your gona buy a synth then just go for only 1...My first synth was a Waldorf Q...that was a monster of a synth...but it taught me how to program. So I would say just go for a Ti or a virus C to save you some money. Dont go nuts and go buy 5 different synths..I,m not even suer that you know your way around synthesis yet? If you dont then you wont be doing much on all these synths, but buying presets and using those. Dont get ahead of yourself..start off slow learn 1 synth then go for more if you feel you have to. I have over 10 synths and I honestly use like 2 or 3 all the time.
