What are the dates for each season?

summer, spring, winter, fall.

As I understand it seasons here don't start at the beginning of the month like they do in Australia. Is that right?

Don't remember the exact dates, but the dates below are pretty accurate. Our seasons always start in the 2/3 of the month.

Winter:
December 21/22 - March 20/21

Spring:
March 20/21 - June 20/21

Summer:
June 20/21 - September 22/23

Fall:
September 22/23 - December 21/22

not sure why.. the seasons always start at a very specific (but different) time as well, like 3:04AM

Seasons are determined by the tilt of the earth. When the earth is tilted such that the position of the equator is on the same plane as that of the sun you have an equinox, this happens twice a year (March and September, on the dates given depending on the year). The time in which the earth begins tilting such that the hemisphere one is in moving toward the sun is called spring, the time from when the hemisphre is most tilted toward the sun until the next equinox is summer, the period it begins tilting away from the sun is winter, and from the date at which it is most tilted away until it returns to equinox is winter.

I'm guessing that they teach that in school here. I'm also guessing 98% of students forget it by the end of the lesson lol

Maybe; however, it's been this way for thousands of years. The winter solstice is the start of winter, the spring equinox is the start of spring, the summer solstice is the start of summer, and the autum equinox is the start of autum.
