A human with absolutely no incentive by social or hygienic means to bathe, refrain from eating or tasting whatever he or she felt like, defecating at will or heeding every instinctual urge to simulate procreative measures does not sound like someone I would like to chill with.

It's why I don't let jennypie come over anymore.

Well, a behaviour that could be harmful to others is sure an offence to everyone else's freedom. Not bathing, when you're aware of the fact that you could transmit loads of diseases that way, is sure threatning to others.

As for refraining from eating, if the person wishes to do so, should you do anything other than telling him about the problems of fasting for too long?

That'd be pretty great. A guy I know almost got into a fight this new year when he went to a bar wearing sunglasses, which is kinda stupid because you could forget them somewhere or break them when you're drunk, they weren't too cheap sunglasses either.. that's at least what he told me earlier. They were saying that he's just showing off with them on.
I don't know whether he truly was showing off or not, but he's not the kind of person I would see showing off very much like that, it's still possible that he was though. Why should anybody care though, just a waste of time getting pissed off at something like that.

Anyhow, he didn't want to get into a fight so he told them that a doctor told him to keep those on all the time because he's going to a surgery of some kind :toothless

But it's so stupid, why some people even care about stuff like that? Or maybe they were just drunk and pissed off because they couldn't get any last year, I don't know..

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.

I've had that happen to me once... I had forgotten my glasses at home, and I needed my sunglasses to see properly, dammit :p

edit: I was at the mall, though, not in a bar.

Ha, when alcohol is involved, all bets are off. Any damn thing can piss people off then.

Just to clarify/

I am obviously taking a very detached view on freedom. But I think that's necessary to consider the concept in any 'pure' sense. I don't believe most people truly have any idea of what freedom entails - myself included. But it seems to me that real freedom would be an extremely simplistic thing - a process of subtracting rather than adding. That is, remove all socialization and guilt, remove all sensibilities that make humans the creatures that they are and perhaps even remove all animalistic sensibilities that urge us to consume or mate or heed to any other biological function which forces us to be dependent upon other creatures for our well-being. What do you have left? Well, not much at all.

Of course I realize there are some states of 'more freedom' than others - and I strive to surround myself with people who would realize this as well and understand its value in coming to know another person for who they truly are without much of the surface bull society programs into people to urge them to support socially-endorsed methods of control or consumerism. Am I special in this? Certainly not. It is just how I decide to live, not some sort of dogma I would urge others to embrace.

Perhaps this sense of personal freedom is why I even bother communicating on the internet at all. Am I 'free' here? No. Am I 'more free' here than I am, say, socializing at work? Ok, my work is kind of a bad example. :stongue: But there are plenty of aspects of people's lives where they feel more compelled to heed certain sensibilities expected of them than others. Strip away those former aspects, and you have someone in a comparably 'free' environment and you are far better off coming to know who they are.

If someone were truly 'free', they would be absolutely apathetic to the well-being or consideration of others around them at least until the point where it had a very direct affect upon their own well-being.

Yeah, the 'others' thing is the source of debate here, I think. Someone free, someone truly individual, will not be socialized to the point of realizing they are even affecting others until the point of their own personal freedom being in question, I believe. They would feel no shame, nor guilt, as they would be free from such concepts that are, frankly, just social conditioning in the first place. Do animals feel guilt or remorse? The really free, solitary ones? Do they regret offending others? I think this is the best comparison, and also a great contributor to our occasional reverence of such creatures.

Should you do something? I don't know. If I were to tell you what to do, it would not be an act of freedom, now would it?

Dang, you guys are so serious.

Freedom kinda means bad guys are not hacking off your limbs and raping your daughters. You know, basic stuff...

You're right about that.. A sad thing really. :( Drinking is so much more fun without people starting fights with each other. Some of the fights are entertaining though, if you're only watching it :happy2:

That kind of behavior should just die away already. I do know that's not going to happen though..
