A 32-year-old man was shot in the back and killed early today after a dispute at a glitzy West Chelsea nightclub spilled into the street, cops said.
The man was with his cousin at club Stereo at 512 W. 29th St. around 3:40 a.m. when he was shot, cops said.
Witnesses said he was still moving and talking afterward. He was pronounced dead about an hour later.
Police responded to the scene at about 3:48 a.m. after getting a 911 call.
Cops said they were seeking a possible suspect and reviewing surveillance videos.
Club Stereo was among a handful of West Side clubs the NYPD’s club enforcement unit wanted a judge to close in 2006.
The other clubs included Crobar, Home and Sol. The targeted clubs are all within an area bordered by W. 26th and W. 29th sts. and and 8th and 12th Aves.
The task force said the clubs harbored criminal activity, including serving alcohol to minors and drug use.
The NYPD created the task force in the summer of 2006 after 18-year-old Jennifer Moore, a college-bound girl from New Jersey, was abducted, raped and killed after partying in Guest House on W. 27th St. Her body was later found in a trash bin in Weehawken, N.J.

Why? It'll just move somewhere else. It's not going to go away. It's the people, not the venues. |

I disagree totally with the whole 'its probably time the chelsea scene faded away...', I go out to those places all the time, and they are a big part of the nightlife scene within NYC. The problem is with a few thug/gangsters that always make negative headlines for these places...
Friends with one of the owners of Stereo, and its a shame this bull happened, he'll be lucky to stay open... |

you can say that about any areas of NYC though, i think to say that is a cop out.... i think they just need to keep doin what they are doin, and the fact that they even argue about minors getting in or other illegal activities is ridiculous! if you have clubs you need to know and realize that these are the things that are going to happen regardless!! banning and closing these clubs is not going to solve anything, its just gonna make it a lot worse. Actually i think it would lead to even more criminal activity but thats just my opinion... |

people don't have to accept illegal activity because "these are the things that are going to happen regardless." if that was the case we should just legalize heroin because it is going to happen anyway. More dramatically, would you agree that we should allow murder because it is going to happen regardless?
i would love to hear how the elimination of havens for drug use would increase crime. this is one of your more ridiculous statements, and you have said some off-the-wall things in the past. |
