Just wondering if anyone here has ever heard (or likes) this band? I'm not a HUGE fan but I do like their stuff a lot, and I'm checking out their show tonight at Terminal 5 (old Exit), anyone else going? I doubt it, but you never know... I know a lot of EDM fans who go crazy over Mars Volta, they're really cool and wierd haha... Anyone?

The Mars Volta has got some cool conceptual music. Didn't the singer of that band used to sing in some crappy emo band?

Yep, that is possible lol... "I love their stuff" would be the next step (to being a huge fan), but at the moment, I just "like their stuff a lot". I'm a huge fan of bands like Sigur Ros, Planet Funk, Royksopp, etc. However, if my brother weren't one of the main guys that manages The Mars Volta on the Universal label, I probably wouldn't have bothered, so that doesn't make me a HUGE fan.

:p

Anyway, my review:

SHOW! There was more weed all over the place than I imagine would be at a Dave Matthews or Phish show. I had a great time, they really didn't change the venue that much (Terminal 5 = old Exit), so it felt really wierd being there three years later listening to a band. Last time I was there was for Jonathan Peters lol...

I liked the band a lot more than the lead singer. They were way less mangled on drugs than he was, although I did like his energy. They do walk the walk and talk the talk though, and deserve to be climing the ladder to success (I heard about these guys several years ago when my brother's label first picked them up and he was one of the guys assigned to get them off the ground). Several years later, and a 5000-capacity building was sold out. It makes me wonder what the hell I'm doing in the EDM scene. Monday + 5000 people + 35$ presale tickets = WTF?! These guys are the real deal, they played a three hour ing set. Tell 80% of the DJs in the scene to do that and they'll charge you an extra $1000. Once again, makes me wonder wtf is wrong with this scene, but anyway...

So I was hanging out in VIP with my brother and his coworkers and he says "be right back, I have to get Erica." I didn't think anything of it really. Until he walks up five minutes later with Erykah Badu next to him. Apparently she's a huge Volta fan and so she joined us upstairs and was rocking out as much as the 17 year-olds downstairs in the pit. I have respect for big artists who take the time out to appreciate other music and other scenes, gives me a lot of respect for them. I wish more DJs and producers could be influenced by the bands of today, maybe they could get some pointers on how to write music with feeling.

Anyway, I had a great time, and if there's ever a show at Terminal 5 you're semi-interested in, go check it out. The promoters behind it are doing a great job packing it out day-in and day-out. The staff was great, sound was ehhhhh, but overall, it was a good time, and The Mars Volta rockkked it!
