Speakers to get... (pg. 2)

DJ Monitors are different than speakers, which are you looking for?

If you want to hold a party, check out the Cerwin Vega RE30 or LS10 or LS12. Loud, sturdy, and CHEAP. I love both of my pairs.

Those are all home theater speakers. Listen to a good monitor for a few years and then plug in a LS12, and you cringe. I own a pair of the LS12s, they're just waisting space in my closet. Way too big for a bedroom setup anyways.

For a bedroom DJ setup, powered studio monitors are the way to go. I personally prefer 2-way PA cabs (yorkville, mackie, JBL, etc) but a bit big and overkill for a bedroom.

Pricerange?

Yes, he asked for speakers not monitors... I assumed he knew the difference.

Yeah, they are harsh, too loud, and way too big for a bedroom setup. Still the best party speakers for the price. I got 2 mint RE30s for $120... that barely buys you one RP5.

What are the difference between speakers and monitors?? And would you need one another in certain situation

Monitors are simply speakers designed for close-quarters detailed monitoring. They focus on near-field sound, sonic detail, flat frequency response and little coloring of the sound. The hallmark of a good monitor is transparency... very little deviation in the speaker's response across a wide frequency band.

On the other hand, home theater speakers tend to a big focus on the bass and highs, while PA cabs tend to put a focus on the guitar and vocal range (mainly mids)... although it does depend on the specific model in question.

Gotcha, makes sense. So i guess you want speakers for parties and such. Although I'm sure monitors could work for small living room parties....

I use monitors in a bit different of a sense. They are the speakers used by the DJ to monitor his mixing/levels/etc. They may or may not be specifically designed for monitoring.

IMO studio monitors in the bedroom is unnecessary and expensive. Get a nice receiver and some Bose 301s. If you have the money, the studio style monitors do sound really nice. Expect weak bass.

Some of the sickest home setups in the "post your setup" thread are rocking the 301s...

$300 for consumer bookshelf speakers.. ha! Bose is so raping people, as usual. I wonder if they fill these with sand, too?

In the ~$300 range, you have a wide selection of mid-grade studio monitors... For example, the tannoy reveal 6 comes to mind. They're near flat from 100hz on up, toss a small sub on the floor to catch the lows.

Any of these smaller speakers are going to have weak bass. It's just a fact of a smaller speaker.

Thats why you high pass them around 110hz, drop a powered sub on the floor and call it done. Maybe a Tannoy TS10 or Yorkville LS200P.

bass and clean bass are two different things. without a sub, you might get some bass but good luck making out the waveform.

amazing how many people drop $3000 on CDJs and a fancy mixer and use consumer speakers :P

I was speaking from a $100/pair standpoint, which they are easily attainable used.

My setup is composed of 2 JBL floors and a Yamaha amp... total cost of $60 from craigslist. Real bass, without a sub, and you can throw a party with them. For less than half of the cost of 1 of the suggested monitors.

Like I said before, if you have the funds, sure, it seems like most people do on this forum. As for me, I can't even afford CDJs yet.

I just the the whole studio monitor thing is over hyped on this site. Maybe I'm just a cheap ass.
