Spectrasonics Omnisphere. $500 softsynth

So... Spectrasonics Unveiled their latest. But you can't get it until September.

They seem to be pretty happy about their new "Steam" engine. I don't know why though, since steam engines have been around in some form since the 1600's. As stated in the FAQ, they're pretty confident that it will fit with any genre "except polka." Well there goes my dream, just when I thought I'd found my do-it-all/go-to synth.

Website:
The STEAM Engine core technology gives us the ability to respond to other technology changes like the Intel-Mac shift from Apple, 64-bit computing, or a major new operating system, said Eric Persing, Founder and Creative Director of Spectrasonics.

http://www.spectrasonics.net/omnisphere_teaser/ has a video where you can see someone play some PHAT chords with it. According to the teaser site, you won't be able to hear audio demos or songs until September. (Losers)

They call it a 'powerhouse synthesizer'. Reminds me of how Quasimidi never categorized their Sirius. The FAQ section defines it as the 'upgrade' to Atmosphere, yet stressing that it is different in every way.

I'll let you explore the rest.

Not sure if you're joking, 3FO5Q, but this sounds like a synth that will do it all (even polka):

"Omnisphere offers a host of hybrid synthesis and new control capabilities including Variable Waveshaping DSP synthesis, Granular synthesis, Timbre Shifting, FM, polyphonic Ring Modulation, high-resolution streaming Sample Playback, Harmonia, Dual Multimode Filter structure, Chaos Envelopes, an advanced Unison mode, and the innovative Flex-Mod modulation routing system - to name a few."

I'll be interested to see the street price - most Spectrasonics sell for only about 10% under retail, so I'd anticipate Omnisphere to be around $450 USD.

edit: just noticed this: "...There will be an upgrade path for all Atmosphere customers, details to be announced in September." - sweet!
