So like I promised, I went to Al Madina to try out chicken shawerma.
After a long and arduous trip from the University of Waterloo bookstore to this restaurant (est. distance 400m), I arrived.
Oh, I also passed by the great Bicycle Spin Out of Dec 05, where I was biking home, but spun out on icy surface and slid out. Luckily no car hit me, therefore ending my glorious career. A moment of silence was observed to commemorate that fateful event.
So I entered the restaurant, and the place had a bit of 'traditional' feel to it. Maybe because I was greeted by 2 old women in hijabs. So yes, I guess I'm at a Muslim (Egyptian to be specific) restaurant.
After being directed to the 'fast food' section of the restaurant, I ordered the chicken shawerma from another lady.
Now it's been a while since I had one of these and I was very intrigued by the process of making a shwerma.
First, the lady got out a knife (probably Japanese in origin because for some reason the Japs make good knives. Maybe something to do with samurai heritage)
There is this stacks of meat on a vertical skewer that I was wondering WTF it was. Oh, it was the chicken.
So she cut out a decent stack of meat from it and dumped it on the grill.
Then the pita was brought out and I was asked what I wanted on it. Being a bit adventurous, I asked for some lettuce and just a bit of tomatoes. Just a bit. I don't like too much tomatoes.
Okay. I also asked for some parsley, some potato mash and some other veggie bits that I don't exactly know what it is except it looked good.
Adding a bit of white sauce and some red sauce (can you tell how much I know about Middle Eastern cuisine?) and the chicken was added to the pita.
Then the lady pressed the pita on some sort of warming machine for a min while I paid her.
Oh, I also got a root beer. Not Barqs. A&W because that is the . (though not as good as you get from restaurant)
With a wicked Desyn Masiello set on my mp3 player, I'm ready to rock. (Desyn Masiello - Live @ Arro Dance - Varna, Bulgaria - December 7, 2006 Get it from here http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...=6&pagenumber=1 )
I opened up the wrapping.
Immediately I'm greeted by a pungent smell. Oh. Tzatziki sauce? Not sure yet.
The texture of the shwerma looks like typical pita (I'm a veteran eater of many pitas. Hey, there's Pita Pit next door to this place and I go there a lot).
First bite.
Overwhelmed by multiple flavours. I love flavours. Bits of spicy with that sauce mixture. I'm guessing the red sauce is some sort of spicy sauce. I can also notice the tomato and after a few bites, the parsley.
Overall, I like this.
After few more bites, there is this other flavour. It's like, I can't describe it except smells like middle eastern spice.
The pita is not dry. Which is good. I hate dry pitas. That is very bad. Bad I tell you.
Still haven't figured out what the mysterious veggie mix is. Kinda hard to tell when there is way too much flavour action going on in my mouth. There is too muich garlic in that I think.
I think I'm content not knowing though.
Next time though, no tomatos. Doesn't seem to go well. Oh, and less of that mysterious veggie mix. Too much garlic is not so good.
Now I'm no expert in Middle Eastern cuisine, but I think I'm overall satisfied with this experience. Not for people who don't like being overwhelmed with too much spices and flavours in their food though.
The Chicken Shwerma was 5.99 plus pop which was like a buck.
Hmmm... Idea for next food review. Should do a video one.
PS: I saw an idiot riding a bike (it's freaking winter) with headphones. The dude deserves a Darwin award. |
