Minor spoilers and opinions:

Guillermo Del Toro's (Pan's Labyrinth) new film (though I think he was producer, no director this time around).

Incredible, amazing film. The tension and anticipation he build throughout were top notch. Rarely am I so riveted by a film that I'm literally on the edge of my seat, but i was for this one. The shots were excellently framed and the audio engineers did high quality work throughout.

And then...the end happened. I've never felt blue balled by a movie to this degree. Sure the end was well put together and all the set up to it was well done but i was so incredibly disappointed with the same freaking death/redemption ending that happened in Pan's (albeit in a different vein).

I highly recommend this film. A lot of people will like the ending but it didn't fit the tone of the film by any means. Anyone else checked this film out yet?

Wasn't a huge fan of it, Pan's Labyrinth was ten times better.

Have you seen them both? Any reason why, or are you just spouting off :p

The Orphanage was just mediocre in everything it attempted. Cloverfield was awesome in most things it was trying to accomplish.

It was just boring, and not just because it was an independent film. It didn't require thought. It was predictable. If it's not going to require thought and be predictable, I expect it to be something like Rambo, where it can be those things and still entertaining.

I cant totally agree with you there. The visual aspects of the film were marvelous. Some shots were poor (I hated the repeated use of the rotating teeter-totter) but for the most part a good job was done contrasting the serene environment with the chaos and disorder of things in and around the house. I was wildly impressed with the foley artist and the soundtrack as a whole was great for a horror movie (tension building without being overwhelming or overly foreshadowing [my main complaint with most "horror" movies is that the soundtrack gives away what is going to happen. This film used a fairly consistent tone of dread to keep that from happening.])

I desperately wanted the movie to end when she was holding the dead body, before she started munching pills. Did you really see her having killed the child by proxy? The end was pretty clear once she had the child by the window, but I kept hoping for it to be left open ended or to reveal her as insane instead. I think that would have been entirely more effective and would have improved the experience, at least personally. I guess everyone needs to see redemption/resolution tales...

I haven't seen Cloverfield but I do think it looks pretty good. However, it also looks like a traditional horror/monster movie instead a more modern psychological thriller making comparison a little more difficult. From what I've heard it's focus is solely on one group of people (the previews made me think wed be following several throughout the picture) but I've been pretty good about avoiding reviews and summaries including Denys' thread since I still love to be surprised at the theater. Hope to check it out this weekend...
