While i agree factory farming has its negatives, and quality of produce is a major one, I think that it is unavoidable until consumers are prepared to pay alot more for their produce in order to give incentive to farmers to raise their livestock using more conventional methods. At current market price, factory farming is a nessecity to remain profitable and make a living for their families. |
That's a myth.
You should read:
Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=pl...umbnail#PPP8,M1
It's only necessary because it's what society demands right now, and unless people change their habits/practices, we will "need" factory farming.
That book won't make you stop eating meat, but it might make you think differently about where you get it. |

my sister is a vegetarian. she is also an on-and-off vegan, budhist, animal rights fighter, environmentalist, guitarist, singer, bass player, surfer...
she cares so much about the environment she sleeps with a bedside light on, consistently (every day) leaves her bedroom light on when she leaves the house and also leaves her laptop on all day while she is at work... she also uses about 5x as much water as everyone else in the house.
you know the type.
believe it or not, there are a lot of them out there. i guess i find it hard to take these people seriously. the reason said vegetarians/vegans get sick so often is because they are borderline retarded, not so much because of their diet.
that said, farming practices are so f'ed up i prefer to just not think about it, in terms of animal cruelty and the environment. :thepirate |

I'm very careful about what I eat, I try to eat organic and fresh foods and I avoid ground beef. Steak is much safer though.
As far as being a vegetarian... I'm sure farmers don't check their fields to make sure there are no local cute animals that could get caught before they plow and tractor their fields. Especially true for large conglomerate farms...
If you REALLY want to prove a point by being a vegetarian, you probably should grow your own garden and eat from it exclusively. Eating vegetarian foods from the grocery store still result in animals being killed. But it's too inconvenient to grow our own farms, I suppose.
Secondly, there are many vitamins and nutrients that are found in meats, exclusively. They cannot be found in plants, and I'm relatively sure that they cannot be synthesized artificially. If you're a hardcore vegon, you're probably deficient of these nutrients and vitamins.
Anyone who is that concerned for the welfare of animals should grow their own food and raise their own livestock. If that's too inconvenient, chances are you're a hypocrite. Driving a hybrid still emits pollution, and just because it's less pollution doesn't mean YOU aren't adding to the problem. Ride a bicycle, or walk. |

When you eat vegetarian, especially vegan, it's harder to get a good nutritional balance. That's the main reason I'm not a vegetarian: inconvenience.
:clown:
I'm just waiting for the vat-grown meat. |

The main reason I don't like vegans and vegetarians is because the majority are whiney and full of .
The animals were already tortured and are already dead. Not eating them is letting them be tortured and killed for no reason. |

Vegans have the right to eat the way they do. Omnivores or carnivores do too.
People have the right to express their opinions.
What annoys me is ones who force others to follow them, or use propaganda, bend the truth, neglect statistics and select those in favour of their cause, turn children against their parents and any radical acts, to promote their lifestyle on others.
I don't like vegans who lie and preach that they can live a lifetime on a vegan diet alone. We've read this preaching several times on this board and elsewhere. They know it's a lie. They know they can't survive without dietary supplements. They won't tell you.
But please respect their desire to eat the way they do. They do so on moral grounds, and i honestly respect them for taking a stand and doing something about it. I do.
I just don't respect those select who get political about it. |

Heh. Not quite that simple. By buying meat you help support the industry that tortures and kills them. |

The dietary supplements are vegan, too, as long as they don't come from animal products... |
