Techno: where to start?
View this Thread in Original format

I've always enjoyed Techno in an abstract way, not knowing anything about it but checking out random acts and downloading random sets here and there 'cause it's fun to have. Now I'd like to start DJ-ing some but I don't really know what artists/labels to start looking into for tracks.

I've got a really specific sound in mind, stuff that has a good driving bassline, not too soft, preferably with a unique groove, and minimal/glitch influences.

I already DJ some Schranz and Hardstyle, so I'm not new to looking for music or anything, but the entire genre of Techno is so vast to me that I'm basically drowning in it without any idea of what direction to go, so what I really need is a few artist names or label names as a jump-off point and I can go from there.

The icons: Derrick May, Joey Beltram, Kevin Saunderson

The classic tracks:

Rhythm is Rhythm - Strings Of Life
Inner City - Big Fun
Joey Beltram - Energy Flash
Jeff Mills - The Bells

other DJs/artists to check out: Jeff Mills, Stacey Pullen, Richie Hawtin (Minimal), Carl Craig, older 808 State stuff (more House-y), Doris Voorn, Jamez

Aside from the basics, I have very little knowledge of Techno. I like some Joel Mull tracks, easy Josh Wink/Winx stuff is good, Stacey Pullen is awesome live. Otherwise, I'm slowly growing a base of what I like from there...

EDIT: Joris Voorn, not Doris

Perhaps a confusing example which borderlines to house a lot? :)

Yeah, but I always hear it called a Techno classic. It really could be called House...

I'd definitely recommend you to start with Detroit stuff, although it might sound a little dated to you, especially if you're looking for techno with minimal/glitch influences.

So for start here's some Detroit stuff:
Galaxy 2 Galaxy - Hi-Tech Jazz (The Science)
Rhythim Is Rhythim - Nude Photo
Carl Craig - Wrap Me In Its Arms
The Aztec Mystic - Jaguar
DBX - Losing Control (Carl Craig Remix)
X-101 - Sonic Destroyer
Underground Resistance - The Punisher
Fix - Flash
F.U.S.E. - Substance Abuse
Kenny Larkin - Integration

Then some European techno:
3 Phase Featuring Dr. Motte - Der Klang Der Familie
Choice - Acid Eiffel
3MB - Die Kosmischen Kuriere
Laurent Garnier - Wake Up
Sven Väth - Scorpio's Movement
Planetary Assault Systems - Booster
Orbital - Chime
CJ Bolland - Camargue
Phobia - Phobia
LFO - LFO (The Leeds Warehouse Mix)
Neal Howard - Indulge (Club House Mix)

Early minimal techno:
Robert Hood - Minus
Horizontal Transfer - Catapillar
Plastikman - Plasticine
DBX - Losing Control
Monolake - Cyan I
Stewart Walker - Amphetamine Sulphate
Ø - Röntgen

Some Basic Channel stuff:
Phylyps - Phylyps Trak
Vainqueur - Lyot (Original Mix)
Maurizio - Ploy (Strategic Mix)
Vainqueur - Elevation (Version 1 (or 3))
Helical Scan - Index (I or II)
Cyrus - Enforcement

Harder/acid techno:
Gaiden - Point Blank (Speedy J Remix)
DJ Misjah & DJ Tim - Access
Ignacio - Virton (Chris Liebing Remix)
Public Energy - Hemi-Sync (Part I or II)
Jeff Mills - The Extremist or The Bells
Surgeon - Magneze
Final Exposure - Vortex
Electric Deluxe - Electric Deluxe

And finally, some intelligent (abstract) techno:
Balil - Flux (D Mix)
Redcell - Interim
The Black Dog - Cost II
Musicology - Fear Of Expression
Speedy J - Pepper
Cmetric - Cequal
Kinesthesia - Speng II
Stasis - Clank
Dave Angel - Rotation

Labels worth checking out: Underground Resistance, Plus 8, Transmat, Tresor, Retroactive, R&S Records, Peacefrog, Basic Channel (and sublabels), Djax-Up-Beats, Music Man, (early) M_nus, Planet E, Metroplex

I think that's enough for the start

Thanks everyone that looks perfect. I'm normally a fan of Junodownload.com to get all my MP3s, but I'm getting the impression it's not the best place to look for Techno. Beatport and Trackitdown would be my other choices, am I missing any important sites that cater especially to techno?
