| I'm trying to format one of my friends computer but I'm having some trouble getting it started. It keeps telling me I have files open on the disk. How do I stop getting this message and get the format running? Btw, it's running the Windows XP OS. |

| You need to create a boot disk, and boot the computer off that. You should be able to format it from there. |

| restart the computer in ms dos mode, then when u get to the command prompt type format c:\ (or whatever the drive name is) then when thats done, restart the computer with the boot disk in the floppy drive, the rest is pretty self explanatory |

Get a really big magnet and hold it near his hard disk... it should be empty then.. J/K
yup, get a boot flop and restart the pc with the bootflop. then typ format c: /q /s (/q /s means fast format, i think)

I mandate that a picture this good has to be posted at least twice in the same thread.

ur just making a blank boot disk arnt you...
try putting some files on it... like format.com, fdisk.com (and all fdisk related stuff) scandisk (and all scandisk related files) etc etc...
then typing format c: /s /whatever might actually do something :)
another thing u could be doing wrong is goin to a DOS prompt and typing format c: /whatever at the c:\ prompt... go to ur a:\ drive then it will run the files off the floppy not off ur HD...
hope this helps:) |
