Need answer ASAP: Best handheld, line-in recorder. [Value/Function]

I'm looking at picking one up to record some gigs over the next month or two - I need something that is easy to slip in my bag (for traveling) alongside my cans and tracks that will do a decent job of recording to either MP3, WAV, or any other audio file.

Preferably looking for answers from those of you who own them - reading reviews it seems many of them are all over the map.

Cheers. :)

Check out the Zoom H2. I never used one but from what I've heard, it's pretty good.

Looks awesome but I can't find anywhere near here that stocks them :(

My only options appear to be the M-Audio Microctrack II and the Tascam DR-1, anyone have any opinion on those?

I haven't used the interfaces that you mentioned, RTJ. I have a Edirol UA-1ex audio interface, and I love it! Its very easy to use once you get the drivers installed, and it sounds really good. I paid $80 for mine shipped off Amazon. What's your budget look like?

Here it is

Oh, my bad - I should have noted that I'm not looking for something to record into my computer, rather a standalone device for recording sets so that I don't have to lug my laptop around.

Sorry for the confusion. :)

The Microtrack is awesome, my buddies use it regularly and it gets the job done nicely, also its easy to check the levels with it.

I have the Zoom H2 and it's great, use it ALL the time. Only complaint I have is the USB interface is USB 2.0 "full speed". That means it runs at USB 1.1 speed (12Mbps), so using the USB to get your stuff off is slow. I use a card reader instead and all is well. Kind of misleading advertising there... I hope a firmware upgrade may fix this, but probably not.

The H2 has a few features that are neat: quadraphonic recording, decent integrated mics, and it can be used as a soundcard or external microphone when linked up to your computer.

At $199 USD, it's the best bargain around for this sort of thing.

The MicroTrack II is very nice as well. It's more money of course ($299 USD here), and the microphone included is not built in like the Zoom (it's a little pluggin jobby). I like everything else about that recorder except for the integrated battery. Has a nice set of pro-inputs, instead of a 1/8" input jack.

The Edirol R-09 is another nice unit, and it's the smallest that I've seen.

Marantz just came out with one as well.

For a DJ, I think the Microtrack is really nice, with the Zoom coming in second if you want to save some bucks.

Avoid the iKey at all costs. Garbage.

This statement makes no sense to me. Can you explain why USB 2.0 doesn't run at 2.0 speed?

Seems like "full speed" is like their equivalent of "EDTV" vs. actual HDTV. It's a marketing thing to trick people into thinking they're getting something they're not. Shady...

Yes! Exactly. I didn't know there were two modes for USB 2.0. USB 2.0 is the standard, but the data rate can be either "full speed" (12) or "high speed" (400). I've never had any other USB 2.0 device that did this though...

What about a minidisc?
