Home Theatre Receiver

I have a NAD T773 home theatre receiver which was the top of the line NAD receiver from a few years back. Seeing as I have such a nice piece of equipment, I would like to use it with my current bedroom DJ setup as I am doing now, HOWEVER, I am looking to upgrade my speakers...I'm not interested in spending an arm and a leg, I just wanna get something that matches well with this amp. I know home theatre receivers are not the best thing to use, but, I don't really want to buy another amp...so I'm gonna need some passive speakers...any ideas? I also wanna get a sub...

Let me know!

those are speakers you listed right?

Awesome amp. So you need 5 speakers or 5 + a sub ? Floorstanders or bookshelves ?
Anyway, regardless of numbers/sizes: I'd recommend some KEF, JAMO, CASTLE, INFINITY for the high end. Otherwise MISSION gives extremely good bang for the buck.

While we're on the subject, I've got a top of the line 15 years ago pioneer receiver collecting dust that I've thought about using if I buy a larger set of possibly non-powered speakers. I know the watts are high, but is there anything I should be concerned about when using a home theater receiver for DJ-related activities?

I also have a nad amp and it's paired with a set of KEF speakers and i personally think they are and awesome match
try the iQ series they sound amazing and there not that expensive

as for miamitrance man, i really don't see any problem you could have, i always use my setup on my Kef speaker and Nad receiver and everything works fine
you don't have to plug in 5 speakers, most of the receivers you can make them play in stereo only and it's pretty cool if you use the 5 speakers you can calibrate each speaker separatly in order to get the best sound

I'd worry about the power & distortion. I'm not sure when they all switched over to the high-current stuff, but that matters a lot more than "watts" (think of it like a 12V car battery vs. 12 1V AA batteries). A lot of the older amps have plenty of power, but if not, the distortion levels come into play, and they used to be far higher unless you went out & grabbed a military-spec board (which you usually could get for the older Pioneers).

It also depends on the type of speakers you have, too. If they're not powered, put some good money into them, and be careful with it. You can drop 3 grand on some Vienna towers, and you'll stab yourself in the ears. There aren't a lot of good passive speakers that work well as monitors [of any type]. The vast majority of the better ones I've heard are either absurdly warm, or have no lows at all. "Flat" is one thing. "I need a sub so I can hear male voices" is another.

yah, i love Kef speakers....i was only thinking of getting 2 bookshelves and a sub...i was also looking at PSB speakers as they're not as colored as the Kef's...what you think?
Mmanu
I never heard PSB speakers so I can't really judge.. Since you're saying "less coloured", I would go the same way. You chose a NAD amp probably for the same reason.. Bear in mind you're gonna plug some Dj gear as well, and it will inevitably colour the sound etc. The NAD will help to keep stupid bass heaviness at bay anyway. If youy have the luck to have a real hifi shop nearby, It's better to go there and have a good listen..

Wow i am not alone... guess what i got for my bedroom setup?... you guessed it.. a very old NAD. I can't believe how well it still works. Amazing sound. I thought she was dead and almost threw her out but she still puts out ;) haha... I was thinking the same thing.. the problem is that it puts out 4 channel stereo. I was thinking powered sub? but then i probally wouldn't have it riged into the NAD. any suggestions?
Mmanu
I'd rather run a passive amp ( which nad is it btw ), or you can still wire up an active if you want, just link it through one of the lines out at the back, you should have at least one available for the tape section, 2 outs if you have 2 tapes out, like on a NAD C 350..
